Congress leader Rahul Gandhi would launch the ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’ in Kanyakumari on 7th September after paying homage and meditating at the Sriperumbudur memorial, the site of the assassination of his father Rajiv Gandhi.
Leader of the Congress Legislature Party, K Selvaperunthagai told the media: “Our leader, Rahul Gandhi Ji will be visiting the memorial on September 7. He will meditate, pay homage, pray and seek the blessings of his father Rajiv Gandhi Ji before launching the Bharat Jodo Yatra in Kanyakumari.”
As part of the advance liaison and preparation drill, security personnel would shortly visit the Sriperumbudur memorial, he said.
According to sources inside the Congress party, efforts are being taken to ensure that the proper arrangements are made at Sriperumbudur in keeping with the solemn occasion and keeping in mind the goal of the party’s nationwide yatra.
According to the sources, some of the topics under consideration include prayers and a tricolor-based theme to stir up nationalist feelings and topple the BJP government at the center. The yatra would take place in Tamil Nadu from September 7 to September 10. The yatra would proceed from neighboring Kerala starting the following day.
On May 21, 1991, a suicide bomber named Dhanu killed former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi in Sriperumbudur.
