A plea was filed in Supreme Court today seeking an impartial SIT investigation into the Bihar hooch tragedy, which has claimed 50 lives so far.

The petition was brought before a bench led by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud today for an expedited hearing. The bench, however, declined to hear the case since it was not listed. “You should have listed it if it’s that crucial. Whatever the situation, discipline is in my court. Sorry, “stated CJI Chandrachud.

The Aryavarta Mahasabha Foundation’s petition, filed through counsel Pawan Prakash Pathak, demanded the creation of a national action plan to combat the manufacture, trade, and sale of illicit liquor.

The PIL further asked the State government to order that the victims’ families be suitably compensated as a result of the people’s rights being violated and jeopardized due to delay.

“Pass instruction that the respondent constitutes an independent Special Investigation Team and undertake an impartial inquiry in this hooch disaster for effective actions as per the law of the land,” the petition added.

The PIL further stated that since the Bihar government banned liquor sales in the state in 2016, it has been tragedy for a significant failure to execute the prohibition and for the numerous negative repercussions that the action has imposed on the people of Bihar.
