With a lead of 155 seats in Gujarat, the home state of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, trends indicate that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is likely to win a record-breaking seventh consecutive term. The Congress is expected to put on its worst performance ever with just under 20 seats.

The Aam Aadmi Party, or AAP, has made gains in the western state, primarily at the expense of the Congress, after launching a strong campaign to make it a three-cornered race for the first time in Gujarat.

However, Himachal Pradesh has saved face for the Congress, which now has a decisive lead over the BJP following a neck-and-neck race after five hours of counting.

The grand old party, which currently only controls power in Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh, both of which will conduct elections in 2023, will be revived depending on the results of the election in the hill state.

According to insiders, the BJP would probably form the government on Sunday or Monday.

Along with the votes cast in the two states, the results of the by-elections held in six assembly districts across five states, as well as the prominent Lok Sabha seat held by Samajwadi Party leader Mulayam Singh Yadav, will also be tallied.
