Four Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders in Punjab have received "X" category armed security protection from the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF)

Top government officials revealed on Saturday that four Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders in Punjab have received “X” category armed security protection from the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF).

A security assessment based on an Intelligence Bureau (IB) report suggesting danger to senior BJP leaders led the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) to order the CRPF to give “X-category” round-the-clock protection to them. Among the BJP heavyweights who supplied security protection were former Punjab cabinet ministers Balbir Singh Sidhu and Gurpreet Singh Kanga, former MLA Jagdip Singh Nakai, and Amarjit Singh Tikka. All four politicians recently left Congress and joined BJP.

Based on a similar IB assessment, Centre also offered five BJP leaders in Punjab “Y” category security coverage in October.

Following threat assessments based on IB reports, the MHA used to provide ‘X’, ‘Y’, ‘Y+’, ‘Z’, and ‘Z+’ category protection through Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) like the CRPF and Central Industrial Security Force (CISF).

MHA ordered CISF and CRPF to provide VIPs with security cover. Both paramilitary organisations have specialised VIP security commando wings that are equipped with cutting-edge close-protection weaponry.
