The Central government has supplied NDA presidential candidate Droupadi Murmu with round-the-clock ‘Z+’ category armed security protection by Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) soldiers, authorities said on Wednesday.
The CRPF has been providing protection to Murmu since Wednesday morning, following directives from the Ministry of Home Affairs on Tuesday evening, an official familiar with the situation informed ANI. On Tuesday, the BJP chose former Jharkhand governor Droupadi Murmu as the governing National Democratic Alliance’s presidential candidate. If elected, the 64-year-old Odisha leader will be the country’s first tribal and second woman president.
PM Modi praised the new NDA candidate saying that she will be a great president. Murmu will face opposition by Yashwant Sinha in the presidential election on July 18.
She served as the governor of Jharkhand from 2015 to 2021, the first governor to complete the term in the state. She was also in consideration for the presidential post in 2017 but later Ramnath Kovind made the cut.
Murmu’s nomination as the BJP’s presidential candidate comes ahead of assembly elections in Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Chhattisgarh. The four states have 128 seats designated for Scheduled Tribes, with the BJP winning just 35 in the most recent assembly elections.
