In the National Herald case, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) has summoned Congress President Sonia Gandhi to appear before the agency on July 21, 2022.

The Income Tax Department, which has been investigating the National Herald case since 2016, filed a charge sheet alleging financial irregularities in the Congress-backed Young Indian Private Limited, which owns the National Herald. Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi are among the company’s promoters and majority shareholders, each owning a 38 percent stake.

The Gandhis are being investigated after the ED filed a new case under the criminal provisions of the PMLA after a Delhi trial court took cognizance of an Income Tax department investigation against Young Indian, which was based on a private criminal complaint filed by Subramanian Swamy in 2013.

Former BJP MP Subramanian Swamy filed a case in the Delhi High Court accusing Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi of land grabbing and misappropriating funds worth thousands of crores of rupees in the National Herald case.

Gandhi had previously written to the investigation agency, requesting a postponement of an appearance scheduled for June 23, 2022, citing recovery from Covid-19.

Rahul Gandhi, her son and former Congress chief, was interrogated for 54 hours in five days.
