After his arrest here early this morning in connection with a money laundering case alleging anomalies surrounding the reconstruction of a chawl in Mumbai, Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut will appear before a special session court on Monday.
Shiv Sena leader was taken into custody early this morning after ED agents stormed his residence on Sunday and questioned him for many hours. In accordance with the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, Raut will undergo medical examinations and then be brought before a Special Court (PMLA).
Uddhav Thackeray, president of Shiv Sena and a former chief minister of Maharashtra, counts Raut as a close ally.
Sanjay Raut’s brother revealed yesterday, prior to his arrest “Sanjay Raut was taken into custody. He was detained because the BJP is terrified of him. We have received no documents from them (regarding his arrest). He’s been set up.”
Sanjay Raut was accused of threatening Swapna Patkar, the wife of Sujit Patkar, a close aide to Shiv Sena MP, in a Mumbai FIR that led to Raut’s detention.
Sections 504,506 and 509 of the IPC were used to record the complaint at the Vakola police station.
Raut is purportedly heard threatening Swapna in a viral audio recording of her.
In the Patra Chawl land case, for which Raut was arrested on Sunday following hours of raids at his home, Swapna Patkar is a witness.
Over 100 personnel have been sent to bolster security surrounding the ED office and JJ hospital in preparation for potential law-and-order emergencies.
