The suspension of four congress MPs from Lok Sabha was revoked, following a motion that was passed in the lower house of the Parliament on Monday.

The four MPs were suspended for the rest of the monsoon session of the Parliament. Speaker Om Birla took a stern view of the continuous disruptions by opposition MPs since the beginning of the monsoon session.

The Congress members of Parliament – Manickam Tagore, Ramya Haridas, T N Prathapan and S Jothi Mani were suspended for the rest of the session after they waved placards during a protest in the house over price rise.

The suspension came amidst repetitive demand of the opposition for a discussion on price rise and hike in GST rates. While the members made it clear that they had no intention to disrespect the speaker, they also alleged that the suspension for the rest of the monsoon session amounts to the “murder of democracy.” A protest was staged in front of Mahatma Gandhi’s statue in the Parliament complex.

Union ministers Piyush Goyal and Prahlad Joshi expressed their concerns over Parliament not being allowed to function, as both the houses witnessed two repeated adjournments over the uproar created by the opposition leaders on various issues.

The Government wants to “throttle” the voice of the opposition by resorting to “tactics of intimidation,” said Congress leader in Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury.

While the cancellation of the suspension was announced, speaker Om Birla made it clear, that this was their last chance. He also added, that no placards would be brought inside the house or else, “I will listen neither to the Government nor the opposition and will surely take action.
