terror attack: Four soldiers were killed in an early Thursday militant attack on an Army camp in Jammu’s Rajouri district, just four days before Independence Day. According to the Army, both militants involved in the attack were killed in the four-hour firefight that ensued.

Subedar Rajendra Prasad (48), of Rajasthan’s Jhunjhunu district, Rifleman Manoj Kumar (26) of Haryana’s Faridabad district, Rifleman D Lakshmanan (24) of Tamil Nadu’s Madurai district, and Rifleman Nishant Malik (21) of Haryana’s Hisar district. The attack, which began shortly after 2 a.m., injured two more soldiers.

“In the early hours of Thursday, alert sentries of the Indian Army post at Parghal, in Darhal area of Rajouri district, detected suspicious persons approaching their post, taking advantage of the inclement weather and dense foliage,” said Defence PRO Lt Colonel Devender Anand.

He claimed that the soldiers confronted the two militants who lobbed grenades while attempting to enter the post. He claims that security personnel then cordoned off the area and engaged them in a firefight. “Six Indian Army soldiers were injured in the operation, and three Bravehearts died while repulsing this suicide attack by militants,” he said, adding that two militants were killed. Later in the day, the fourth soldier died from his injuries.

The first gunshot was heard around 2 a.m., according to officials and eyewitnesses, when militants attempted to breach the camp’s external fence.

At a press conference last month following the arrest of a Lashkar-e-Toiba commander, Talib Shah, in Reasi district, Jammu Additional Director General of Police, Mukesh Singh, stated that two militants were suspected to be in the Pir Panjal area. Shah, he claimed, told police that he had obtained the militants from the Kashmir side.

On August 2, two Jammu Kashmir Ghaznavi Force (JKGF) militants threw a crude grenade at a police barrack in Ramban district. While both militants were apprehended, police said they were looking for more suspects, including a person who allegedly gave the militants Rs 50,000 in exchange for carrying out the attack.
