In the midst of the ongoing, already underway countdown to the party president’s elections, Maharashtra Congress chief Nana Patole said on Thursday that if Rahul Gandhi is reluctant, Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot can take over as party leader.
“This is an internal matter of the party. Rahul Gandhi doesn’t want to be the party President, this is coming to light through the media. If Ashok Gehlot becomes the party chief, there is no problem. There is democracy in Congress,” said Maharashtra Congress chief Nana Patole.
“Those who mock us on the basis of nepotism, have a family in Nagpur. BJP’s politics across the country runs on the basis of that family. Congress will stand with whoever is unanimously elected as the President of the party,” he added.
His remarks were made in advance of the September 20 elections for the post of Congress Party President.
According to sources, Rahul Gandhi, the party’s leader, is reluctant to run for president, making the election a challenge for Congress.
The internal election process for the Congress party was finished on August 20. The party had said that the presidential election would take place between August 21 and September 20, but Rahul Gandhi has yet to declare his position despite several attempts.
The Central Election Authority has reportedly taken all necessary steps to finish the election on schedule. The Congress Working Committee meeting where the election dates for the position of Chairman will be announced is what the authority’s chairman is waiting. Once those dates are announced, the authority will notify the same.
