Dhankhar, an attorney by training, entered politics in 1989. In July 2019, he was appointed governor of West Bengal, and ever then, his contentious interactions with the Mamata Banerjee administration have garnered media attention. He submitted his letter of resignation as West Bengal’s governor.

At a gathering of 17 opposition party leaders at the home of NCP supremo Sharad Pawar, the decision was made to field Alva.

Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) stated on Friday that it will endorse opposition vice presidential candidate Margaret Alva.
