NHRC Issues Notice To UP Govt Over Death Of A Patient, Seeks Report Within Two Weeks

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Thursday took suo motu cognisance of the reported mismanagement of the hospital and police resulting in the death of a 25-year-old patient at the Kanpur Medical College, Uttar Pradesh, earlier this month.

The patient has been identified as Sundar, who allegedly died due to not receiving treatment on time after the doctor referred him to another hospital.

Patient Dies After He Did Not Reach Referred Hospital On Time

As per the NHRC release, persons who were admitted as patients left the hospital. No one was there to accompany him. Even though a police escort did not reach the hospital for about 6-7 hours, he died.

Additionally, the body of the victim remained in the ward for several hours till it started stinking, forcing the other patients to leave. Thereafter, the body was shifted to the mortuary, it added.

NHRC Seeks Report Within Two Weeks

The Commission has issued notices to the State Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police calling for a detailed report on the matter within two weeks.

This delay in handling the remains has sparked outrage and raised serious questions about the standard of care and dignity afforded to patients.

The NHRC stated that if the reported facts are accurate, they represent a grave violation of human rights.
