Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) Chief Mohan Bhagwat on Tuesday said the purpose of the RSS was for ‘Bharat’, and its true significance lay in making India a ‘vishwaguru’ (global leader).

He said, “The RSS is completing 100 years of its journey. The essence of RSS lies in the last line of our prayer, which we recite every day, ‘Bharat Mata ki Jai’. Swami Vivekananda once said, ‘Every nation has a mission to fulfil.’

Bhagwat’s remarks came during a lecture series, organised marking 100 years of the organisation.

Emphasising India’s contribution, he further said, “India has been contributing to the world. If any country is to become a leader, it should not do so for its own sake, but rather its leadership should bring a necessary new momentum to the world order.”

Mahan Bhagwat’s Take On the Fight For India’s Independence

Noting the importance of the 1857 revolt, he said that some individuals used politics to achieve independence, which led to the formation of the Indian National Congress.

He added, “Many political parties germinated from it. They achieved their aim of independence. Had that movement, that wave enlightened the way it should have, even after independence, the picture today would have been starkly different.”

Apart from it, there was another wave of revolutionaries. However, the purpose of that revolution ended after independence. Savarkar was a luminous gem of that wave. That wave does not exist anymore, and it is not needed also, but that wave was an inspiration to live and die for the country, he further said.

Mohan Bhagwat On RSS Formation

The RSS Chief stated that the thought of forming such an organisation predated the year of its establishment in 1925.

We are celebrating 100 years this year, but the idea of an organisation like this sprouted in Doctor Sahab’s (Hedgewar) mind many years before. That idea took shape after the ‘Vijayadashmi’ of 1925.

Mohan Bhagwat On the Idea Behind the Formation

He said that Doctor Saheb announced the form of the organisation for the Hindu community.

Anyone who wants to be identified as a Hindu will have to be a responsible citizen of the country. This is a responsible community because we have had this identity for a long time.

Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) organised a series of programmes across the country. This year, on Vijayadashami, the RSS completed 100 years.

In Delhi, the RSS organised a lecture series at Vigyan Bhawan from Aug 26 to Aug 28, 2025, where RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat delivered a lecture on the ‘100 Years of the Sangh’s Journey – New Horizons’.
