The removal of Raghav Chadha from a key parliamentary role has triggered intense political speculation, raising questions about his future within the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and whether a larger realignment is underway ahead of the high-stakes Punjab Assembly elections in 2027.
In a major internal move, the AAP has removed Raghav Chadha as its Deputy Leader in the Rajya Sabha, a position he held since 2023. The party communicated its decision to the Rajya Sabha Secretariat, nominating Punjab MP Ashok Mittal as his replacement.
Notably, the party has also requested that Chadha should not be allotted speaking time in the House from AAP’s quota, an unusual step that has further fueled speculation about internal differences.
The party has not publicly disclosed the reason behind Chadha’s removal. However, reports suggest issues related to alleged indiscipline and deviation from the party line.
Chadha’s absence during key political moments particularly after AAP leaders Arvind Kejriwal and Manish Sisodia secured relief in the Delhi excise policy-linked case has raised eyebrows. He was also reportedly missing from party meetings and press interactions, further deepening the perception of a growing rift.
The developments have coincided with rising chatter about Chadha possibly switching to the BJP ahead of the Punjab elections. His reduced public visibility and silence on key party developments have added to the buzz.
However, there has been no official confirmation from Chadha or the BJP regarding any such move.
Senior AAP leader Sanjay Singh has strongly dismissed the speculation, calling it “baseless.” He asserted that Chadha remains an integral part of the party and shares a close relationship with its leadership.
Singh emphasised that internal issues, if any, would be resolved within the party. Taking a firm stand, he added that if Chadha were to join the BJP, he would be “the first to oppose” such a move.
Raghav Chadha was once seen as a key strategist in Punjab and served as an advisor to Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann. However, his influence in the state unit is believed to have declined over time, with Mann emerging as the undisputed leader of the party in Punjab.
This shift in internal power dynamics is also being seen as a possible factor behind recent developments.
The Punjab Assembly elections, expected in 2027, will be crucial for all major political players. AAP, which currently holds power in the state, will aim to retain its dominance, while the BJP is working to expand its footprint.
Any major political switch involving a leader like Chadha who has national visibility and urban appeal could significantly alter electoral equations.
While the speculation continues to gain traction, the reality remains unclear. The sequence of events, his removal from a key post, reduced visibility, and internal reshuffles suggests possible turbulence within AAP, but not necessarily an imminent defection.
For now, the BJP entry buzz remains in the realm of political conjecture. Chadha’s next move, whether it involves reconciliation within AAP or a broader strategic shift, will be closely watched as Punjab heads toward a high-stakes electoral battle.
