Mayank Agarwal of India is expected to replace skipper Rohit Sharma in Team India’s squad for the upcoming fifth Test against England.
Rohit Sharma tested positive for COVID-19 during a Rapid Antigen Test (RAT) on Saturday. According to ESPNcricinfo, Agarwal will arrive in England on Monday and join the rest of the Indian team this evening. According to the most recent government regulations, Agarwal will not be subjected to any quarantine and will thus be eligible to play immediately if needed.
Agarwal was previously left out of Team India’s team for the Edgbaston Test in May, but KL Rahul’s injury and questions over Rohit Sharma’s rehabilitation have given him an opportunity.
Agarwal’s previous Test appearance was against Sri Lanka in March, where he scored 59 runs in two matches at an average of 19.66. Later, in IPL 2022, he led Punjab Kings and had a forgettable season.
As the club ended sixth on the standings, the batter managed just 196 runs in 14 games, an average of 16.33 and a strike rate of 122.5.
In terms of the fifth Test, India and England will face off on July 1 at Edgbaston Cricket Ground in Birmingham.
The rescheduled match is part of a five-match Test series that was postponed after the fourth Test owing to a COVID-19 outbreak in the Indian camp last year.
