Following its establishment at the UN General Assembly in 2014, the International Day of Yoga has been observed every year on June 21.

At the centrepiece of the seventh annual International Day of Yoga in the heritage city of Mysuru, Karnataka, Prime Minister Narendra Modi practised yoga on Tuesday.

Along with the Prime Minister, more than 15,000 people celebrated yoga on the grounds of Mysore Palace.

At the ceremony, yoga was practised by dignitaries including the Governor of Karnataka Thaawarchand Gehlot, the Chief Minister of Karnataka Basavaraj Bommai, the Union Minister for Ayush Sarbananda Sonowal, representatives from the Ministry of Ayush and the Government of Karnataka, and others.

The Ministry for Ayush designated 75 venues for Union Ministers to take part in the Yoga Day celebration to commemorate India’s 75th anniversary of independence.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi introduced the concept of the International Yoga Day on September 27, 2014, in an address to the UN General Assembly. 177 countries agreed with the draught resolution that India passed. On December 11, 2014, the United Nations proclaimed June 21 as the International Day of Yoga due to the practice’s widespread acceptance and rising popularity.

On June 21, 2015, the first was observed.
