EAM Jaishankar unveils bust of Mahatma Gandhi in Paraguay

Mahatma Gandhi’s bust was dedicated in Asuncion, Paraguay on Sunday by Union External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar, who also praised the Asuncion Municipality for choosing a prominent shoreline for its placement. The stone statue was unveiled by Jaishankar, who is now on his first-ever official trip to South America. The EAM posted images from the waterfront on Twitter and described it as a significant message of unity amid the COVID-19 epidemic.

After that, he went to the famous Casa de la Independencia, Asunción, where the Paraguayan Independence movement had its beginnings more than 200 years earlier. He praised the relations between the two countries while displaying photos from the museum.

From August 22 to 27, S Jaishankar, the minister of external affairs for India, will be travelling on official business to Brazil, Paraguay, and Argentina.

He will meet with his colleagues on a bilateral basis during his tour, and he will also call on the senior officials of all three nations. The newly opened Indian Embassy in Paraguay, which began operations in January 2022, will also be inaugurated by EAM while he is there. Later, during his trips to Brazil and Argentina, he will co-chair the Joint Commission Meetings (JCM) with his counterparts.

The meetings’ main objectives, according to the MEA in its statement, are to assess bilateral cooperation in many areas and to talk about regional and global topics of shared concern. Notably, India has strategic alliances with both Brazil and Argentina. The minister is furthermore slated to give a speech at Brazil’s Rio Branco Institute (Brazilian Diplomatic Academy).
