Over 1.9 million residents across Japan have been advised to evacuate to safer locations as tsunami waves impact several coastal areas, causing widespread transport disruptions across the country. However, the wave heights have remained significantly lower than early predictions.
The Fire and Disaster Management Agency has released localized evacuation directives affecting approximately 1,905,596 individuals across 21 prefectures. The largest evacuation figures come from Hokkaido, Kanagawa, and Wakayama.
The initial tsunami waves struck Japan’s northernmost island, Hokkaido, where footage shared by Reuters and Nippon News Network showed people seeking refuge on rooftops. Tsunami alarms echoed throughout parts of the island on Wednesday morning.
According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, tsunami waves measuring between 30 and 50 centimeters have been observed along the eastern coastline, advancing toward the Tokyo Metropolitan Area
