Prime Minister Narendra Modi will launch the Mopa International Airport in Goa on Sunday in order to improve connectivity in the country.

The expansion follows Centre’s ongoing efforts to provide world-class infrastructure and transportation amenities throughout the country. Prime Minister lay the airport’s foundation stone in November 2016.

The airport was designed on the idea of sustainable infrastructure and contains a solar power plant, green buildings, LED lighting on the runway, rainwater collection, state-of-the-art sewage treatment plant with recycling capabilities, and other such facilities.

The Prime Minister’s Office’s official statement reads “It has implemented world-class technologies such as 3-D Monolithic Precast Buildings, StabilRoad, Robomatic Hollow Precast Walls, and 5G compatible IT infrastructure. Among the airport’s features are a runway capable of handling the world’s largest aircrafts, 14 parking bays with night parking facilities for aircrafts, self-baggage drop facilities, and state-of-the-art and independent air navigation infrastructure.”

Initially, phase I of the Airport will serve about 4.4 million passengers per annum (MPPA), with a saturation capacity of 33 MPPA.

The airport is anticipated to help the state’s socioeconomic growth and meet the demands of the tourism industry. It has the potential to serve as a vital logistical centre, linking several local and international destinations. Multi-modal connection is also proposed for the airport.
