According to the President’s Secretariat, outgoing President of India Ram Nath Kovind will address the country on the eve of his departure today.

From 19:00 hours, the address will be carried on the whole national network of All India Radio (AIR) and televised on all Doordarshan stations. Droupadi Murmu was voted as India’s next President on Friday, defeating the opposition’s presidential nominee, Yashwant Sinha.

On Monday, she will take the oath of office in the Central Hall of Parliament.

Droupadi, 64, won that election, receiving more than 64% of valid votes. She will be the country’s 15th president, succeeding Ram Nath Kovind.

Murmu will be the first person of tribal descent to hold the post. She is from the Mayurbhanj area of Odisha and belongs to the Santhal tribe.

Her candidacy also caused a schism in the opposing camp. Because of her tribal background, the JMM party in Jharkhand backed her. A few other tribal MPs and MLAs voted for her as well, crossing party lines.

Murmu is expected to take the oath of office on July 25, with incumbent President Ram Nath Kovind’s term concluding on July 24.

However, she will be the second woman to be elected President, following Pratibha Patil.
