The government recently introduced the Agnipath Scheme in an effort to reform the recruiting procedure for the Armed Forces. With the new military recruitment programme facing opposition, the Centre has decided to modify the maximum age restriction for recruiting Agniveers.

The Centre declared on June 16, 2022, that the Agniveer upper age restriction for recruitments via the Agnipath Scheme has been raised to 23 years from 21 years, as a one-time waiver.

Following the centre’s announcement, a pan India protests erupted. The protestors claim that as per this scheme they will have no professional degree or special qualifications after 17.5 years which will eventually force them to work in second-rate jobs.

Their main concern is that they will not be able to perform well in the four years allotted to them, and that after that period; they will be out of work without a pension or other retirement benefits.
