PM Modi's massive job-creation drive targets 10 lakh new hires in 18 months
The prime minister’s review meeting comes more than two months after he advised central government secretaries to take immediate steps to fill existing vacancies in ministries and departments.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi reviewed the status of human resources across all government departments and ministries on Tuesday, instructing that ten lakh people be recruited in the next 18 months, according to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).
The prime minister’s review meeting comes more than two months after he advised central government secretaries to take immediate steps to fill existing vacancies in ministries and departments, according to cabinet secretary Rajiv Gauba, as quoted by sources.
During his meeting with the secretaries on April 2, the prime minister emphasised that all government interventions in the public and private sectors should focus on employment.
The cabinet secretary had written to the secretaries and asked them to take action on the prime minister’s suggestion right away.
The government’s decision comes amid frequent criticism from the opposition on the issue of unemployment. A large number of vacant positions in various government sectors have frequently been identified.
