On his birthday in 2015, he received the Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian honour bestowed by India.
The Narendra Modi administration designated December 25—his birthday—as Good Governance Day. He was India’s first prime minister who was not a member of the Congress party. He passed away on August 16, 2018.
