Shiv Sena and other members of Opposition parties caused a commotion on Monday, forcing Rajya Sabha to adjourn for over an hour till midday over Sanjay Raut’s detention by Enforcement Directorate (ED) and rising prices.

Soon after House met for the day at 11 am, M Venkaiah Naidu, chairman of the Rajya Sabha, announced the House’s adjournment. Shiv Sena lawmakers descended on the House well to chant anti-government slogans after Sanjay Raut, a Rajya Sabha member and the party’s leader, was reportedly unfairly targeted by the government’s central investigative agencies.

After being questioned for a full day about suspected irregularities in the Patra Chawl redevelopment project in Mumbai’s Goregaon, Raut was detained by the ED on Sunday.

Priyanka Chaturvedi and Anil Desai, both members of the Shiv Sena, displayed signs that said, “ED stands for the extended department of BJP.” The administration was being denounced by MPs from other opposition parties for price increases and other problems.

M. Venkaiah Naidu, chairman of Rajya Sabha, attempted to govern the House amidst clamour and asked the MPs to return to their seats. Chairman called the House to adjourn till noon while commotion persisted.

Beginning on July 18, Monsoon Session of Parliament will last till August 12.
