Ranil Wickramesinghe announced as the President of Sri Lanka

The neighbouring island nation of Sri Lanka officially chose Ranil Wickremesinghe as its new president on Wednesday (July 20, 2022). He is his nation's eighth executive president.
Ranil Wickremesinghe, a six-time former prime minister, Anura Dissanayake, the head of the communist People’s Liberation Front (JVP), and Dullas Alahapperuma, an SLPP dissident and former minister of education, competed for the position of president.

Who competed in the race?
Ranil Wickremesinghe, a six-time former prime minister, Anura Dissanayake, the head of the communist People’s Liberation Front (JVP), and Dullas Alahapperuma, an SLPP dissident and former minister of education, competed for the position of president.
Mahinda Rajapaksa, a former prime minister of Sri Lanka, and his son Namal Rajapaksa participated in the voting. They both came out to vote for the elections after spending the previous few days in hiding.
