The Namo Bharat Train (Rapid Rail) is likely to begin operations across its full corridor from February 22, alongside the launch of the Meerut Metro. The Namo Bharat rapid rail service is expected to cut travel time dramatically, allowing the journey to be completed in just about 55–58 minutes over a distance of roughly 82 km. That is a huge drop from the usual two hours or more during peak road traffic.
The rapid rail corridor is part of the Delhi–Ghaziabad–Meerut Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS), which aims to make travel fast, reliable and affordable for daily commuters. Reports say that, during recent trial runs, the Namo Bharat trains covered the full route in about 57 minutes.
According to reports, officials say the trains can reach a top operational speed of up to 160 km/h during regular service. This is one of the key reasons the system can cover such long distances in such short time, even while stopping at several stations along the way.
The new corridor will include several important stations that passengers can use between Delhi and Meerut. Starting from Sarai Kale Khan in Delhi, trains will stop at New Ashok Nagar, Anand Vihar, Sahibabad, Ghaziabad, Guldhar, Duhai, and multiple stops in Meerut including Meerut South, Shatabdi Nagar, Begumpul, and Modipuram.
One feature many commuters are excited about is the station at Sarai Kale Khan, which sits next to other major transport links. A 280-metre foot overbridge with travelators will make it easier for people to move between the rapid rail station and nearby rail and metro services.
As per reports, Ticket prices for Namo Bharat trains will depend on distance. The fares will start from around Rs 20 on the operational sections. Officials say this will make it cheaper than many private transport options once people factor in fuel, tolls and time saved from traffic.
Alongside the rapid rail project, the Meerut Metro is also expected to launch soon. It will run on a 21-km stretch from Meerut South to Modipuram, covering the trip in about 30 minutes at speeds up to 120 km/h.
