Jaishankar said on Tuesday that India is looking forward to joining the Nuclear Suppliers Group

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said on Tuesday that India is looking forward to joining the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) after overcoming political obstacles that are detrimental to the global interest.

During an event held by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) to mark the eight years of the Narendra Modi government, he delivered the remarks to the foreign diplomatic corps based in India.

“A polity like India’s natural propensity is to strengthen a rules-based system. We are grateful for any and all possibilities to contribute to it “he stated.

India’s participation in the MTCR (Missile Technology Control Regime), the Australia Group, and the Wassenaar Arrangement, according to Jaishankar, is significant. All of these groups are under the umbrella of multilateral export control regimes.

“As a country with a significant nuclear industry, we also look forward to joining the Nuclear Suppliers Group and overcoming political obstacles that are detrimental to global interests,” Jaishankar added.

The NSG, which has 48 members, is an elite group of countries that deals with nuclear technology and fissile materials commerce as well as nuclear non-proliferation.
