Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to travel to Samarkand in Uzbekistan to attend the 22nd Meeting of the Council of Heads of State of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit on September 14th.

The summit will also include Russian president Vladimir Putin, Chinese PM Xi Jinping and Pakistan’s PM Shehbaz Sharif along with other heads of state from Central Asian economies. It will be the first in-person SCO summit after the COVID-19 era.

SCO currently has eight member states, namely India, China, Russia, Pakistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan. Countries like Egypt, Qatar and Saudi Arabia also became dialogue partners last year. Leaders of Observer states, the Secretary General of the SCO, Executive Director of the SCO Regional Anti-Terrorist Structure (RATS) and the President of Turkmenistan will also attend the meeting.

Matters on ‘‘state and prospects of multilateral cooperation in the future’’ and ‘‘issues of regional and global importance’’ will be discussed during the meeting said the external affairs ministry in a press release.

The summit is important for India due to its rising trade relations with several other Central Asian economies that are also members of the SCO.

India may also address the matters related to terrorism since most of the members in the SCO want to fight against terrorism along with cross-border planned crimes, human trafficking, and illegal migration. It will also be the first time since PM Modi will be meeting China’s PM Xi Jinping after the Brazil, Russia, India and China (BRICS) 2019 summit and the 2020 Galwan clash.

This particular SCO summit is vital for India since the presidency of the SCO will be handed over to India till September 2023. This means that it is most likely for Delhi to host the 2023 SCO Summit.
