After his recent piece in a Malayalam daily sparked rumours that the former Union minister may run, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor said on Tuesday that an election will be helpful for the party but declined to comment on whether he will.
When asked whether he would run for president in the Party’s election, Tharoor told reporters “I have nothing to say. I agree with what I said in my essay that the Congress party would benefit from an election.”
Further Thiruvananthapuram MP also praised the party’s elections and lamented Rahul Gandhi’s rejection of the position of Congress President.
He felt that the notion that just one family should be in charge of the great old party should be disregarded.
Towards a piece for the Malayalam newspaper Mathrubhumi, Tharoor said that the party elections were the first step in reviving the organisation.
Rahul Gandhi should head the Congress party, according to Congressman Mallikarjun Kharge, who believes he can help the party recover from its current predicament.
Kharge declared, “The scenario surrounding the election of the Congress Party President is now completely obvious. Rahul Gandhi should currently be the leader of the Congress party, in my opinion and the workers’ opinion as well. He ought to take over as leader of the Congress party.”
According to reports, the Congress Working Committee (CWC) resolved on Sunday that the election for Congress president will take place on October 17.
On October 19, the votes will be tallied.
The senior party leader Gulam Nabi Azad’s resignation on Friday serves as a backdrop to this.
Sources claim that Rahul Gandhi’s hesitation to run for president has made Congress’ ability to win the election more difficult.
Central Election Authority has taken steps to ensure that the election is held on schedule.
Although all attempts are still being made to persuade Rahul Gandhi to run for Congress president, the process appears to be stopped, according to further sources.
