It’s been an year after India lifted the T20 World Cup 2024 trophy, former batter Ambati Rayudu has shared a surprising insight about Suryakumar Yadav’s game-changing catch. The dismissal of South Africa’s David Miller sparked debates at the time, not only for its timing but also because of a curious boundary rope controversy.

Boundary Rope Controversy Uncovered

During a candid chat on the ‘Unfiltered Podcast’, Rayudu explained that the world feed team had placed a chair and screen near the boundary to assist broadcasters. “There were world feed commentators. During the break, what usually happens is they put a chair there and a screen in order to help the broadcasters see what is happening,” he said.

The placement of the chair inadvertently pushed the boundary rope back slightly. Even after the equipment was removed, the rope wasn’t returned to its original position, effectively enlarging the boundary just in time for Surya’s catch. “That is how the boundary became a little bigger for us. We (the commentators) could see it from above. It was god’s plan,” Rayudu added.

Surya Yadav Reflects on the Catch

When asked about whether the ball would have been a six under normal circumstances, Suryakumar remained modest. “I don’t know if it was a six (in natural circumstances) or not. If the rope had been placed at its normal position, maybe Surya would’ve run from inside,” he said, emphasizing that luck played a part in that crucial moment.

Rayudu further defended the legitimacy of the catch amid the ongoing debate. He insisted that the dismissal was clean and the controversy surrounding the rope’s placement didn’t change the outcome. “End of the day, God was with us,” Rayudu concluded, underlining the blend of skill and fortune behind the moment.

Mixed Reactions from Cricketing Circles

Following the game, a number of players (current and former) raised eyebrows over the placing of the boundary rope. The viewers and analysts would analyze the videos and replays to postulate that the rope which was a bit longer played some role in the catch. The cricketing fraternity forgot the incident soon but the questions still remain.

The story behind the scenes given by Rayudu is another added dimension to one of the most unforgettable victories in India. Although the controversy is long forgotten, fans still remember Surya and his spectacular attempt, and it is shown how split-second moments and minor details can make history in cricket.

The Catch That Changed History

The David Miller sacking is still vivid in the minds of the fans not only by the time but also by the drama attached to it. The revelation by Rayudu explains how a small technical aspect, such as the positioning of a chair and screen, had side effects. To the Indian cricket fans it reminds them of the training, talent and perhaps God-time that made the catch memorable.
