Gautam Gambhir's Shocking Influence on Shubman Gill's Vice Captaincy Appointment in Asia Cup: Report (Image Credit - X)
The selection of the Indian team to play the Asia Cup 2025 began with a twist as the chairman of the selection committee Ajit Agarkar named Shubman Gill first. Not only his inclusion but that his name appeared with the title of vice-captain, which he was retaining after a year and a half, made the headlines.
The opening question at the press conference was to the captain Suryakumar Yadav regarding the appointment of Gill as vice-captain. All knew, including Agarkar, Surya, and Indian cricket fans, that the return of Gill was not an empty one. The leadership call formed a major part of the selection meeting that was delayed by heavy rains in Mumbai.
The reinstatement of Gill was not plain. His lack of participation in the T20I set-up since July last year had come under scrutiny, but both Agarkar and Surya made it clear that Gill was part of the long-term scheme. What they did not openly say however was that Gill was not the first choice to the vice-captaincy.
The Indian Express stated that the appointment of Shubman Gill was the result of some serious discussions. All-rounder Axar Patel was also in the reckoning of the selectors but they finally chose Gill. Eventually the panel decided to invest in a younger name with future leadership credentials. The head coach Gautam Gambhir, who attended the meeting virtually, supported that belief.
Gambhir claimed that the Indian cricket had to groom a person who could become a captain in the future. The support he gave Gill played an important role, swaying the pendulum in the direction of providing a formal leadership position to the young opener. This decision was a reminder that one should not only focus on short-term outcomes but also long-term perspective.
The captain of India Test team, Gill, will make a comeback in T20I. He is likely to play in Asia Cup XI in the UAE between September 9 to 28. This made sure that Yashasvi Jaiswal, who had had a stellar England tour, could not get a spot in the squad.
Agarkar illuminated the issue of Gill coming back in the leadership by reminiscing his previous tenure in the leadership. When we were in Sri Lanka he was the vice-captain. Thereafter, he was occupied with Test cricket, however. We clearly see some leadership in him and his performance in England was better than expected.
Gill had lost chances during the previous year because of injury and workload control. He was sidelined in the South Africa T20Is as he prepared to play the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and also the England home series due to a back spasm. Selectors feel that he would have been able to keep his deputy position all along had he been fit.
Suryakumar Yadav backed the decision. “Gill was always part of the first-choice Indian T20 side,” he said. “He missed out due to other commitments and injuries, but the leadership group has always believed in his potential.” Gill is 25 years old, and he is being viewed as the heir to Suryakumar, who is 35 years old soon.
The vice-captaincy of Shubman Gill is not a temporary move because of the support of Gambhir and the trust of Agarkar. It is an indication of a long-term commitment to developing him as the next T20 leader of India and it is a chance he will now have to live up to on the Asia Cup stage.
