John Wall Leaves the Court, But Not Without a Reason

John Wall, former top draft pick and five time NBA All Star, retired at the age of 34 after an 11 year career. A key member of the Washington Wizards' team, he left a fiery partnership with Bradley Beal to collect 18.7 points and 8.9 assists.

The five time NBA All Star and electric point guard, John Wall, has retired permanently at the age of 34 marking the end of his blazing career on the 11 season account of his achievements, which left a nice trace on the fans and an indent of an era. Wall officially affirmed the news through an emotional Instagram video with the touchingly apt caption of Retired but never done.

John Wall’s Legacy

Chosen on the overall No. 1 position by the Washington Wizards in 2010 NBA Draft, Wall became an instant player. Across more than 9 seasons with the team in DC, he has developed into one of the most competitive backcourts in the game with Bradley Beal being showered with the All NBA Third Team selection in 2017 besides an achievement in the slam dunk contest category in 2014. He was also the steals leader 201617. Wall ended his career playing with three teams Wizards (2010 to 2020), Houston Rockets (2020 to 2022) and Los Angeles Clippers (2022 to 2023) and had the following career statistics of 18.7 points, 8.9 assists, 4.2 rebounds and 1.7 steals per game in 647 regular season games. During his tenue with the Wizards, he led the team to four playoffs victories, including a very remarkable Visit to the East Conference semis in 2017.

John Wall’s injuries

Injuries however significantly affected his latter career especially a ruptured Achilles in 2019 and continuing bad knees, making him prone to limited availability in the later two seasons of the 2017 to 2018 season and subsequently lengthy bouts of absence. Of note, Wall had not played since January 2023 when he declared his retirement.

Addressing his audience in his send off speech, Wall speculated on the bigger meaning of his trip: “When it comes to the jerseys I put on, the stat lines, and the victories, they usually matter more than that.” It meant something more.” He thanked family members, trainers, coaches and fans and maintained that he still belonged to the game as he looks to take up new roles off the court.
