India’s Asia Cup 2025 squad announcement has stirred up controversy, with former cricketer Mohammad Kaif questioning the removal of Axar Patel as vice-captain. The selectors have appointed Shubman Gill as deputy to Suryakumar Yadav, a move that surprised many fans and experts.
Kaif expressed concern over the handling of Axar’s demotion, saying on X (formerly Twitter), “I hope Axar Patel was informed about his removal from vice-captaincy in advance and didn’t come to know about it from the press conference. Axar did no wrong, so he deserves an explanation.”
Gill, who last played a T20I in July 2024 against Sri Lanka, returns with a leadership promotion, signaling the management’s intention to shape him into an all-format player. Suryakumar Yadav continues to lead the side, having captained India during their successful England tour.
India’s Asia Cup squad also sees the return of Jasprit Bumrah and Kuldeep Yadav, both part of the 2024 T20 World Cup-winning team. Their presence boosts India’s bowling attack ahead of a packed schedule leading into the 2026 T20 World Cup.
The core of India’s T20I squad remains unchanged, with Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya, and others retaining their places after the England series. Standby players include Prasidh Krishna, Washington Sundar, Riyan Parag, Dhruv Jurel, and Yashasvi Jaiswal.
Chief selector Ajit Agarkar announced the squad at a press conference in Mumbai, also confirming the group-stage fixtures for the Asia Cup. India will face UAE on September 10 and archrivals Pakistan on September 14, in a tournament held across Abu Dhabi and Dubai from September 9 to 28.
With 15 T20Is scheduled post-Asia Cup, the road to the 2026 World Cup begins now. All eyes will be on how leadership shifts and returning veterans shape India’s preparations as the Men in Blue look to defend their title on UAE soil.
