Star Indian batsman Shreyas Iyer has been dropped out of the India squad to participate in the Asia cup 2025. BCCI fixed its 15-member team on Tuesday and even though Iyer had dream run in the IPL, his name was not on the list.

Punjab Kings Share Video of Shreyas Iyer

The Punjab Kings have backed their skipper in a special social media message just one day after the news. The franchise posted a video of Shreyas Iyer and wrote the caption as Sapranch Saab, which is a term that indicates how they have idolized the chic right-hander.

The post soon went viral and supporters came to Iyer. Several fans gave their regret on his exclusion in the Asia Cup team and commended the Punjab Kings on their support of their captain in the open. This was a morale booster to the batter who had borne the team through the season in the IPL.

Selectors Explain Asia Cup Snub

The chief selector Ajit Agarkar appeared before the media after announcing the squad and explained why Shreyas Iyer was not included in this squad. “With regards to Shreyas, I mean, you need to tell him who he can replace. No fault of his, nor is it ours. It’s just that we have to pick 15 at the moment, he’ll have to wait for his chance,” Agarkar explained.

Agarkar insisted that Iyer was left out on selection lines but not performance. Having 15 spaces to fill, the selectors were forced to make hard choices. He alluded that Iyer is not out of the long term planning yet and can be used in future teams.

Shreyas Iyer’s Consistency in T20 Cricket

The 30-year-old has a brilliant record having last played an international T20 match in December of 2023. Having played 18 T20Is, Hreyas Iyer has 1,104 runs at an average of 30.66 with a good strike rate of 136.12. His capability to stabilize the innings and score at a good pace is what makes him a stable middle order.

He also played one of his finest seasons in IPL 2025 where he amassed more than 600 runs at a strike rate of 175.07. He was one of the elite groups of the highest strike rate in a season since Chris Gayle in 2011 and Suryakumar Yadav in 2023.

Middle-Order Competition Intensifies

There is still a lot of competition to get a place in the middle order of India. Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya, and Axar Patel are already known, leaving the selectors with the choice between such options as Tilak Varma and Shreyas Iyer. Tilak had made an impression with two centuries on the tour of South Africa but did not repeat the same in the IPL 2025.

Tilak ended the season with 343 runs in 13 innings at the average of 31.18 and the strike rate of 138.30. Although his international game was impressive, Iyer has been bombastic in the IPL which makes him a contender in the No. 3 position in future matches.

Not yet, however, Shreyas Iyer will have to wait. Deeply supported by his franchise Punjab Kings and with figures to support his value, his re-entry into the Indian team seems more of when rather than whether.
