Why Sachin Tendulkar Wants To Change A Key Cricket Rule: ‘Technology… will be consistently inaccurate’

Sachin Tendulkar, one of the greatest names in cricket, has again posted his thoughts on a change that he feels is important in the game. The Indian myth feels that the Umpire should call in the DRS rule should be done away with in the game.

The Decision Review System (DRS) has been in the international cricket scene over the past decade, and it has brought controversy to players, umpires, and fans. Though the technology was introduced to make the game fairer, the Umpire call has divided and confused opinions.

This aspect of the rule has been criticized by Tendulkar on many occasions and his position on the matter was recently explained in an Ask Me Anything session on Reddit. He stated the reasons why he would wish to see the cricket world abandon the Umpire call.

“I would change the DRS rule on the Umpire’s call. Players have chosen to go upstairs because they were unhappy with the on-field umpire’s call. Hence, there should be no option to go back to that call. Just like how players have bad patches, umpires, too, have bad patches. Technology even when inaccurate will be consistently inaccurate,” Tendulkar remarked.

Umpire’s call explained in cricket decisions

The call made by the Umpire is quite important in the event that a team makes a decision to review an on-field decision. In case the evidence provided by technology is not categorical, the decision made by the on-field umpire is upheld. This provides them with the advantage of the doubt despite the replay contrary to this.

Ball-tracking technology is also used in cases of leg-before-wicket (LBW). In case only a portion of the ball is seen to be striking the stumps, the decision may still stand. This is where Umpire call usually disappoints viewers and players.

Sachin Tendulkar on why cricket needs clarity

In the case of Tendulkar, cricket cannot have a draw after taking a review. He pointed out that players request reviews when they do not agree with the decision of the umpire, and going back to the decision would be counterproductive to the introduction of DRS.

The point made by his argument is that technology is not always flawless but at least it is consistent. Tendulkar thinks that the consistency is better than the uncertainty that is currently present with the Umpire call.

Other than his opinions on regulations, Sachin Tendulkar can be associated with the name of a cricketing master. He was called the Master Blaster and played to the fans over 25 years and made every stroke that can be made in the sport.

In the period between 1989 to 2013, Tendulkar played all forms of cricket and created a spectacular record. He is the highest run-scorer in world cricket with 34,357 runs in 664 international matches.

He is the record holder with 100 centuries at the international level and 164 fifties. No other cricketer has ever scored a century of centuries and this makes Tendulkar one of the greatest to ever play the game.
