Sukanya Mondal, the daughter of TMC leader and Birbhum district president Anubrata Mondal, appeared before the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Wednesday in connection with the multi-crore cattle smuggling scandal in West Bengal.

Mondal arrived at the Enforcement Directorate headquarters here after being summoned by the federal government to answer questions. The move comes just days after a special court under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) at Rouse Avenue Court in Delhi put Sehgal Hossain, Anubrata Mondal’s bodyguard, in Enforcement Directorate custody for seven days in connection with the case.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which is also investigating the cattle-smuggling scheme, has questioned Mondal in the case.

The CBI has filed a new charge sheet in a special court in Asansol, West Burdwan district, West Bengal, naming TMC heavyweight Anubrata Mondal as a direct beneficiary of the cattle fraud. The CBI has also highlighted in the charge sheet facts of Mondal’s and his family members’ vast assets and property.

Anubrata Mondal was detained on August 11 in connection with the multi-crore West Bengal livestock smuggling scheme.

According to investigators, a chain of shell corporations was utilised in the fund diversion operation.

The money reportedly transferred to the accounts of those entities who are at the rudimentary level of the chain, the officials said, adding, “The accused subsequently diverted a portion of the proceeds received to multiple tertiary shell entities”.
