Udaipur Tailor Beheading Case: NIA files FIR under UAPA

National Inquiry Agency (NIA) assumed control of the investigation into the gruesome murder of Kanhaiya Lal, a tailor who was slashed to death inside of his shop by two men in broad daylight a day earlier in Udaipur, Rajasthan.

According to a senior NIA officer, the anti-terror agency has also filed a First Information Report (FIR) under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and different sections of the Indian Penal Code. The action was taken shortly after the Ministry of Home Affairs instructed the NIA to assume control of the case’s investigation, which stunned citizens all throughout the nation.

In accordance with sections 452, 302, 153(A), 153(B), 295(A), and 34 of the IPC as well as sections 16, 18, and 20 of the UA(P) Act, 1967, the NIA has filed a case against the accused who are believed to have plotted, organised, and carried out the heinous murder of Shri Kanhaiya Lal Telli on June 28, 2012, in Udaipur, Rajasthan.

“MHA has instructed the National Probe Agency (NIA) to take over the investigation into the barbaric murder of Shri Kanhaiya Lal Teli perpetrated at Udaipur, Rajasthan, yesterday,” the Home Ministry Office (HMO) said through its official Twitter account.

HMO also stated in the tweet that “any organization’s involvement and overseas ties would be properly probed.”

After arriving in Udaipur yesterday night, a four-person NIA team overseen by an Inspector General and a Deputy Inspector General (DIG)-rank official has already begun collecting information about the event.

NIA team has begun an all-encompassing investigation.

The event happened in the Maldas neighbourhood of Udaipur. The two accused uploaded a video on social media shortly after the crime boasting about the “beheading” and threatening the Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s life, according to authorities.

After the event, the two suspects were detained shortly after.

In the video, the attackers introduced themselves as Riyaz Akhtari and Ghouse Mohammad.

In the video, Riyaz is seen using a sharp object to strike Kanhaiya Lal, 47, while Ghouse records the incident on his phone.

The victim, a former BJP politician who made contentious comments about the Prophet Mohammad, apparently recently published a social media message in support of Nupur Sharma.

Both Riyaz and Ghouse, who are Udaipur residents, were detained in the Rajsamand district’s Bhim.

Local markets in the vicinity were closed after the murder because the shopkeepers wanted justice for the victim.

There is a curfew in effect and internet access has been banned in Udaipur.

In order to retain police on the ground and boost force mobility, a statewide notice has also been sent to all SPs and IGs.
