Vladimir Makei, who is fluent in both German and English, has served as the Republic of Belarus's Minister of Foreign Affairs since 2012.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Belarus announced on Twitter that Vladimir Makei, the country’s foreign minister, has passed away. We still don’t know all the specifics of the foreign minister’s ‘sudden’ death.

According to a statement posted on the official website, the president of Belarus also sent his condolences to Makei’s family and friends following his passing on Saturday.

According to his official bio on the website of Austria’s foreign ministry, Makei was born in 1958 in the Belarusian region of Grodno and earned degrees from the Minsk State Pedagogical Institute of Foreign Languages in 1980 and the Diplomatic Academy of Austria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1993.

Vladimir Makei, who is fluent in both German and English, has served as the Republic of Belarus’s Minister of Foreign Affairs since 2012.

He was an Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador to the United Nations.

He served as the President of the Republic of Belarus’s assistant from 2000 to 2008 before being appointed as the country’s foreign minister.
According to his official biography on the website of the foreign ministry, Makei served as the head of the Administration of the President of the Republic of Belarus from 2008 to 2012.

Vladimir Makei, the foreign minister of Belarus, visited New Delhi at the beginning of November to speak with EAM Dr. S. Jaishankar about a range of topics, including bilateral economic relations, the war in Ukraine, and multilateral cooperation.

Notably, Belarus is one of the few nations said to be aiding the Russian military in the fight in Ukraine.
