The governor of West Bengal, Jagdeep Dhankhar, has been announced as the NDA’s vice presidential candidate for India. JP Nadda, the president of the BJP, referred to Mr. Dhankhar as a “kisan putra” (farmer’s son) who had become a “people’s governor.”
In 1951, Jat farmer Jagdeep Dhankhar was created in the Rajasthani hamlet of Kithana.
He began as a lawyer and has worked in both the Rajasthan High Court and the Supreme Court. A year after entering parliament, in 1990, he was given the title of senior attorney.
He was close to former deputy prime minister Devi Lal, and he took Devi Lal’s lead when the latter left the VP Singh administration in 1990 to join Chandra Shekhar’s minority government as a federal minister.
When PV Narasimha Rao became prime minister, he joined the Congress. But when Ashok Gehlot rose to prominence in Rajasthan politics, he switched to the BJP and is rumoured to have quickly became close to Vasundhara Raje.
In July 2019, Mr. Dhankhar was chosen to serve as the governor of West Bengal. Since then, he has frequently clashed with the administration of Mamata Banerjee.
As NDA nominates its vice- presidential candidate, Jagdeep Dhankar was praised by Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a “kisan putra.”
