Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Monday presented a letter from the Ukrainian first lady to US President Donald Trump, humorously saying that it is ‘not for you’ but was intended at US First Lady, Melania Trump.
“My wife, the first lady of Ukraine, she gave the letter. It’s not to you but to your wife,” Zelensky said, according to CNN.
The gesture follows last week’s event when Trump handed a letter from Melania Trump to Russian President Vladimir Putin at their Alaska summit.
The letter, reposted by the first lady’s office on X on Saturday via Fox News, emphasizes the plight of children affected by global conflicts. AFP reported that it did not mention Ukraine directly.
It read, “In today’s world, some children are forced to carry a quiet laughter, untouched by the darkness around them.”
Addressing Putin directly, the letter added, “Mr Putin, you can singlehandedly restore their melodic laughter. In protecting the innocence of these children, you will do more than serve Russia alone – you serve humanity itself.”
“Such a bold idea transcends all human division, and you, Mr Putin, are fit to implement this vision with a stroke of the pen today. It is time,” the letter concluded.
Following the letter exchange, US President Donald Trump hosted Zelensky at the White House for discussions on a potential peace deal with Russia.
Addressing reporters from the Oval Office, Trump said a successful meeting could pave the way for a trilateral meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin aimed at ending the Ukraine-Russia conflict.
“We’re going to have a meeting. I think if everything works out well today, we’ll have a trilat and I think there will be a reasonable chance of ending the war when we do that,” Trump said.
Zelensky’s visit to Washington included several European leaders, reflecting broad international interest in Ukraine’s situation. Among them were:
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen
French President Emmanuel Macron
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer
*German Chancellor Friedrich Merz
Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni
Finnish President Alexander Stubb
NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte
