Aubrey Plaza Gets Real About Husband Jeff Baena's Suicide On Amy Poehler's Podcast
Aubrey Plaza showed her courage and appeared on Amy Poehler’s Good Hang podcast, sharing her journey with the painful grief after her husband Jeff Baena took his own life in January 2025. The way Aubrey described her despair with such raw honesty seems touching and real to everyone who is resonating with grief for their loved ones.
On August 19, 2025, Plaza joined her former Parks and Recreation co-star Amy Poehler for a poignant episode of Good Hang. Poehler, 53, kicked off the conversation by asking, “On behalf of all the people who feel like they know you, and the people who do know you, how are you feeling today?”
She earnestly asked how Plaza was handling it. To this, Plaza, 41, voiced her vulnerability, “Right in this very, very present moment, I feel happy to be with you,” before dejectedly saying, “Overall, I’m here and I’m functioning. I feel really grateful to be moving through the world. I think I’m okay, but it’s like a daily struggle, obviously.”
For Plaza, the Gorge stands as a metaphor for her grief. Channeling the 2025 sci-fi The Gorge, starring Miles Teller and Anya Taylor-Joy, she makes the imagery of a dangerous chasm with all sorts of threats a fare for her feelings. “
“At all times there’s like a giant ocean of awfulness, that’s like right there and I can see it. Sometimes I just want to dive into it, and just like be in it. Then sometimes I just look at it, and sometimes I try to get away from it. But, it’s always there,” she shared.
Such a poetic representation struck emotionally-charged conversations between fans on X and Reddit. Embedding her sorrow into yet another narrative for widespread consumption illustrates Plant’s incredible depth as an artist, situated against the backdrop of the harshest personal reality ever.
Speaking of Baena, he directed some of Plaza’s films and wrote other scripts too, Plaza cast a glimmer of gratitude into the abyss that is her life over the last year by stating how good she feels just by existing. The couple started dating in 2011 and got married in May, 2021.
For opening herself to the world after what she went through with him till now, Honey Don’t! was her first mass appearance. Plaza’s strong will and positive spirit offer a hope for others to rise from enduring grief.
