Austin Butler’s Shocking Health Crisis
Austin Butler, the 34-year-old star, recently spoke about his very disturbing health scare very much been threatening his life. The temporary blindness episode was caused by an extreme migraine, according to the report while he was going to shoot The Bikeriders in 2023. It was like his body was sucking the life from him. What exactly happened? Here’s the reason behind Butler’s nightmare.
On a flight scene in The Bikeriders, Butler was jolted awake with a migraine that struck him really badly when the plane was descending. “I suddenly felt this euphoric sensation, and I actually really thought I was dying,” he told.
His vision ceased for a few minutes. He terrifyingly also attributes that experience to not sleeping enough. But such intensity rent may persuade their sight into being willed again and back to work.
Medical science notes that temporary blindness, which can occur due to migraine, is not directly a symptom of lack of sleep- deprivation. Such is Butler’s experience of where method acting has taken him physically, which leaves him with other challenges, including hospitalisation for a week.
Butler managed to shine with a performance that gave him an Oscar nomination in Elvis, plus additional roles in Dune: Part Two and Masters of the Air. But it did come at a very personal price.
For example, he confessed to Men Health that such acting induced tortured processes, for which he burned out eventually, resulting in health problems such as what feels like appendicitis and keeping him from walking normally for eight months because of a shard of glass in his foot during the Dune press tour.
The episode of temporary blindness was a wake-up sign that one should prioritize craft over health. Butler is a lesson on how method actors battle life blackouts, gaining entry to the body and the mind to bear the burden of the roles being played.
Laura Dern’s mentorship, whom Butler acknowledges as the equivalent of his late mother, made a huge impact on his balancing acts. Dern, 58, schooled him on, “You do not have to destroy the light to give big performances.”
“She’s helping me see that you can come out the other side, and maybe bits of you have healed,” Butler shared. Butler’s story reflects the self-care importance in a high-pressure industry that aspiring actors are encouraged to pursue without sacrificing their passion. Besides, his upcoming works, “Caught Stealing,” to be released in theatres on August 29, 2025.
