Jude Law and Jason Bateman headline Netflix’s gritty drama Black Rabbit
Netflix will be adding a new gritty drama to its line-up as the new show Black Rabbit has been announced a limited series that will take viewers down the seedy underbelly of New York City’s nightlife. Jude Law and Jason Bateman lead the cast as estranged brothers already gets a lot of hype around this show. Law stars as Jake Friedkin, the cocky proprietor of an elite lounge and Bateman is Vince Friedken, his troubled brother whose return to town disrupts Jake’s well-ordered world.
This primary source of tension is the engine of the show, but what ultimately makes the story pop is the deep pool of supporting characters who give life to this richly textured community of people. The ensemble is composed of a mix of day players and relative newcomers, all keeping the ceaseless horndoggy mayhem in balance.
Other than the two leads, the rest of the cast is deep with quality television and film talent that you will recognize. Cleopatra Coleman, known for Rebel Moon and Clipped, portrays Estelle, a celebrity interior designer. An impression in Bodies was made by Amaka Okafor, who plays a driven and ambitious chef, Roxie. The series also stars Ṣọpẹ́ Dìrísù of Gangs of London as Wes, a musician and businessman whose life the Friedkin brothers intersect with.
The dramatic urgency of the narrative is then further added to by the addition of Dagmara Dominczyk, who was a fan favorite in Succession, as Val, Jake’s rich ex-wife. This star-studded cast guarantees rich and engaging performances that will have fans enthralled.
The universe of Black Rabbit is not limited to the upscale nightclub, but seeps into the darker regions of the city. Actors cast in the show play a variety of characters that occupy the other side of New York. Oscar winner Troy Kotsur (CODA) appears as a local mob bookie, introducing the plot’s element of organized crime. Abbey Lee (Mad Max: Fury Road) plays an experienced New York bartender, and Odessa Young (The Staircase) appears as a tattoo artist.
The cast is completed by the likes of Chris Coy playing a small-time bookie, and Gus Birney as Mel Whitney, a crucial character whose secrets are still to be uncovered. The cast being so diverse and talented, Black Rabbit will not just be a crime thriller, but a profound examination of lives intertwined in a city full of secrets.
