Snyder unveils The Last Photograph with new lead duo
Director Zack Snyder is continuing with his long gestating passion project, The Last Photograph, and Stuart Martin and Fra Fee have been cast in the lead roles. It is an extreme contrast to Snyder s current high-budget, CGI-driven projects such as the Justice League and Rebel Moon franchises as the film has spent more than 10 years in development. He says it is more of a character-oriented, personal drama, which was an exploration of life and death.
It has marked a significant change in creativity by Snyder, who gets to make the world more connected to the ground, visceral narrative such as he tells in his earlier works Dawn of the Dead and 300. The green light in the film is a very important occasion to his followers as well as the industry because green light is a culmination of a personal adventure to transfer this particular story into the film.
The casting of Stuart Martin and Fra Fee is a curious one; Martin in particular has appeared in Snyder Netflix epic Rebel Moon. They played lesser roles in that sci-fi saga and this film will bring them to the forefront. Both Martin, with his credit in the television series Miss Scarlet and the Duke, and Fee, whose bona fides as a dramatic actor come by the show known as Hawkeye on Marvel, are good actors.
Their exchange on this more intimate feature with Snyder is in a way a harmonizing of visions and forces that the director is eager to continue in the development of his new repertory of future performers.
The plot of the film focuses on a former DEA member who after the murder of a diplomat and his wife in an especially cruel way is set to find out his niece and nephew in the mountains of South America. He gets the aid of a burned-out war photographer who is the sole witness to the faces of killers. Their dangerous travel teaches them to fight with the apparitions of their own previous lives and doubt their promises.
It is told as a story of trauma and redemption, with the locative search to find the children serving as a metaphor of a more deeply rooted, and hence personal, search to find the truth. Being co-written by Snyder and Kurt Johnstad, who worked with him previously in 300, the plot is expected to impress the audience and leave it with an emotional impact.
