India Issues Blue, Red & White Passports: What’s Their Meaning And Which Country’s Passport Is Most Powerful
Types of Passports in India: India has issued three types of passports in distinct colours – blue, white, and red. Each colour represents a specific category of traveller.
The Ministry of External Affairs monitors the passport system under the Passports Act, 1967. The colour-coding of passports simplifies checks for authorities. Now, the e-passports are issued, embedded with biometric chips to reduce risks of tampering and speed up immigration processes.
Blue-Coloured Passport: The blue-colour passport, also known as the ordinary passport, is the most commonly issued passport to Indian citizens, which is used for personal, business, leisure, or educational travel abroad.
White-Coloured Passport: This type of passport is issued to government officials, civil servants, and military personnel travelling on official duty. The White Passports grant them certain privileges at immigration counters.
Red-Coloured Passport: As per the MEA, the red or maroon passport is only issued to diplomats, high-ranking government representatives, and their families. It enables faster visa clearances and visa-free access to several countries.
According to the Henley Passport Index, Singapore’s passport is the most powerful among 193 countries. Next in line are Japan and South Korea, securing second place with access to 190 destinations.
In the recent report, launched in 2025, India has made an eight-rank jump, reaching 77th position, with the Indian passport now granting visa-free travel to 59 nations.
