Cyclone Montha, Weather Update: IMD Issues Red Alerts Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Odisha, West Bengal Brace For Impact | All We Know So Far

  • The IMD has declared an orange alert for three districts and the other northeast districts are under a yellow alert for heavy rainfall. Officials are telling everyone to avoid stray and to take shelter away from beach front until the cyclone passes.
  • In all of the state of Andhra Pradesh, 22 teams of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) are present in addition to local staff with resources for rescue. The state government is monitoring the situation closely with the expected support of central agencies and disaster management staff.
  • Train services in some areas of the State have been cancelled for precautionary reasons, and people should monitor the train schedule in advance (if traveling) before planning any trip. Roads in coastal zones may also have closures as needed for rescue efforts.
  • Heavy rainfall will occur in some areas of Odisha, Chhattisgarh, and Tamil Nadu until October 30, and residents in these areas are also advised to prepare for possible flooding or power outages.

Bundi Records 130mm Rain in 24 Hours, Udaipur, Kota to Receive Heavy Rainfall

Nainwa in the Bundi district recorded the highest rainfall of 130 mm over 24 hours till Tuesday morning. Udaipur, Kota, and nearby districts are likely to witness heavy rainfall today. Light to moderate rain might be witnessed in Ajmer, Jaipur, Bharatpur, and Jodhpur divisions.

Severe Cyclonic Storm Montha nears Andhra coast, expected landfall by evening of October 28

As of 1:30 pm on October 28, 2025, Cyclone Montha is about 100 km south-southeast of Machilipatnam and 180 km from Kakinada, moving north-northwest at 12 kmph. It is expected to cross the Andhra Pradesh coast near Kakinada by evening/night. The storm will bring maximum sustained winds of 90-100 kmph, gusting up to 110 kmph. Residents are urged to follow safety advisories and stay alert. The IMD continues to monitor the cyclone closely and issues weather updates regularly.

Odisha Announces 2,000 Evacuation Shelters

Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi announced that more than 2,000 disaster relief centers have been opened in eight southern districts. More than 11,000 people have been evacuated to these shelters to protect them from Cyclone Montha.

On Saturday, October 28, 2025, at 8:30 AM IST, Cyclone Montha was observed by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) over the west-central Bay of Bengal. It had moved 12 km/h north-northwest in the past 6 hours, was approximately 160 km south-southeast of Machilipatnam (Andhra Pradesh), 240 km south-southeast of Kakinada (Andhra Pradesh), 320 km south-southwest of Visakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh) and 530 km south-southwest of Gopalpur (Odisha).  
Residents are advised to be alert as the cyclone and continued heavy rainfall with gusty winds starts to move on land towards the coast. The cyclone is expected to make landfall on October 28, near the Andhra coast.

NDRF teams pre-deployed for Mitigation of Cyclone Montha

The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has maintained 45 teams for cyclone related disaster mitigation across Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Chhattisgarh. Twenty-five teams have been pre-deployed in vulnerable areas, with twenty teams resting for response. The response teams were deployed to manage rescues and relief in the immediate outcome of Cyclone Montha in the region.

Train Cancellations Due to Cyclone Montha

East Coast Railway has cancelled several trains because of Cyclone Montha. Samaleswari Express from Rayagada and Jagadalpur is terminated at Rayagada on October 29. Hirakhand Express and Intercity Express services between Rayagada and Jagadalpur on October 28 and 29 are also cancelled to ensure passenger safety.

Cyclone Montha Live - Rain is Likely in Chennai, Kanchipuram and Several Districts of Tamil Nadu

Cyclone Montha is the first cyclone of this year, and because of the cyclone we may see rainfall in Tamil Nadu, particularly in Chennai and Kanchipuram. According to IMD, moderate to heavy rains are expected across the Vidarbha region during the 28th to the 30th of October, as Cyclone Montha continues northwest. Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu has ordered that district officials conduct evacuation of citizens from coastal areas considered vulnerable, to rehabilitation centres as soon as possible. Over the west-central Bay of Bengal, Cyclone “Montha,” which is currently traveling northwest at 15–18 kmph, has gotten stronger.  It was around 450 kilometers southeast of Kakinada as of Monday night, and by the evening of October 28, it is predicted to reach land close to Kakinada as a severe storm with wind gusts of 90 to 110 kmph.  Fishermen are advised not to go out to sea till October 29 due to the IMD’s predictions of heavy to extremely heavy rains in Yanam and coastal Andhra Pradesh.

High Waves and the Risk of Flooding Along the Andhra Coast

From Nellore to Srikakulam, large sea waves of 2 to 4.7 meters are predicted by the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) to continue until 11:30 p.m. on Monday.  Low-lying areas between Yanam and Machilipatnam might be inundated by a storm surge up to one meter above tide levels, putting coastal areas on flood alert.  Residents have been urged by authorities to stay indoors and refrain from traveling, particularly when the rains get heavier during the night.

787 pregnant women Are Moved To Hospitals in Andhra Pradesh as a precaution

In light of Cyclone “Montha’s” intensification, Andhra Pradesh Health Minister Satya Kumar Yadav announced on Monday that 787 pregnant women who were close to giving birth had been moved to local hospitals as a precaution.  Based on data collected by Auxiliary Nurse Midwives (ANMs), the women who were located within a week of their due dates were transferred to district and local government hospitals.

High Waves Along The Andhra Coast Are Warned By The Weather Service

As Cyclone Montha approaches the area, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) and the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) have predicted heavy sea waves along the Andhra Pradesh coast from Nellore to Srikakulam.  On October 27, between 5:30 and 11:30 p.m., waves of 2 to 4.7 m are predicted, per a combined bulletin released by the two agencies.  Coastal residents and fishermen have been advised by authorities to exercise caution and refrain from going out to sea during this time.

Residents in Andhra Pradesh's coastal areas are ordered to evacuate immediately.

In an official statement on Monday, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu urged officials to act quickly to save lives and minimize damage in coastal districts as Cyclone Montha approaches the eastern coast. The Chief Minister instructed district collectors and police superintendents to quickly relocate inhabitants from vulnerable coastal areas to rehabilitation facilities during a teleconference held from the Secretariat’s RTGS Centre.

NTR district, all government welfare hostels (BC, SC, ST, and Gurukul) were closed and the students were sent home to precaution. Following Collector G. Guntur Commissioner Orders Action on Encroachments & Flood Preparedness

Guntur Municipal Commissioner Puli Srinivasulu has asked town planning officials to remove all encroachments on footpaths adjacent to important city roads, with urgency. This is to enable free flow of rainwater into the city’s drainage system without causing water logging or road stagnation. He stressed the need for prompt clearing and debris removal, on a war footing basis. 

The Commissioner stated that encroachments obstructing rainwater flow disrupt drainage, which contributes to flooding, especially in the event of rains. He also ordered ‘preparedness measures’ for flood control, such as clearing the debris and placing equipment in low-lying areas to prevent future water stagnation.

Officials are tasked to observe and remove encroachments on a daily basis, to improve water flow and traffic movement.

“The system is expected to move approximately west-northwestward and further intensify into a cyclonic storm over the southwest and adjacent westcentral Bay of Bengal within the next 12 hours,” the IMD announced on Sunday night, adding that it is likely to subsequently shift northwestward, and then north-northwestward, intensifying into a severe cyclonic storm by the morning of October 28.

Cyclone Montha Live Updates: A deep depression, “Montha,” over the Bay of Bengal will cause heavy rain in some districts of West Bengal from October 28 to 31, the IMD said on Sunday. 

The fishermen shouldn’t venture out to sea along and off the West Bengal coast until October 30, and to those at sea should return by Monday, the meteorological department said. 

The weather system is likely to make landfall as a severe cyclone along the coast of Andhra Pradesh during the night of October 28, and expect light to moderate rainfall in southern Bengal’s Kolkata and Howrah, as well as South 24 Parganas, Purba and Paschim Medinipur, Jhargram, Purulia, Bankura, and Hooghly.

Cyclone Montha Live Update: Odisha government is ready to deal with lack of cyclonic issues

In an Interview with ANI, Odisha’s Revenue and Disaster Management, Suresh Pujari said the state is prepared and has done all precautionary preparations for cyclone Montha , Mr Pujari also stated that eight districts were identified as being the “most vulnerable,” and that all departments are instructed to be vigilant and prepared. “The Government of Odisha, come cyclone has made comprehensive preparations located currently now 930 kilometers from then Odisha Coast heading west northwest,” stated minister. Eight districts in the state have been recognized as highly susceptible… We assessed our preparedness with officials, pinpointing vulnerable areas and notifying pertinent departments such as energy, public relations, rural development, health, and agriculture… Cyclone shelters, emergency relief centers, and designated plots are operational… The water resources department has begun to release water from reservoirs,” he was quoted as saying.

IMD has issued an Orange Alert for Chennai and surrounding areas as Cyclone Montha is moving to the east coast of the country with a potential of heavy rainfall.

Although the issued heavy rain warnings, no orders are imposed on school/college closures, so schools and colleges will operate as normal.

Cyclone Montha Live Updates: All 30 districts of Odisha on alert

On Sunday, the Odisha government put all 30 districts of the state on a state of alert after it determined that the depression in the Bay of Bengal (Montha), had intensified into a deep depression.

Odisha is expected to see very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall on October 28 and 29, the officials added.

Also, the weather office has hoisted Distant Cautionary Signal No-I (DC-1) at all ports of Odisha and advised fishermen not to venture into the sea until October 29.

As reported by the IMD, a red alert has been declared for certain regions of Andhra Pradesh. Cyclone Montha LIVE: Andhra Pradesh announces two-day school closure

Due to heavy rains because of Cyclone Montha, various districts are announcing school closures in Andhra Pradesh. The AP government announced a general school holiday for three districts – Visakhapatnam, Anakapalle and West Godavari – that were severely impacted due to Cyclone Montha on October 27 and 28. CM Chandrababu Naidu instructed the district collector to declare a general government and private school holiday, in addition to Junior and Degree colleges, on October 27 and 28 in Visakhapatnam, where Cyclone Montha made landfall and caused a lot of damage. The general holiday could be extended for two days if the schedules permit.

Cyclone Montha LIVE: Evacuation Drive Underway in Odisha

The government of Odisha has started to evacuate people from the coastal and low-lying areas that could be in danger of Cyclone Montha’s approach to the state. On Sunday, the authorities have taken actions to start large-scale evacuations, with 128 disaster response teams moving into eight districts. According to IMD, the deep depression over the Bay of Bengal has started to strengthen very rapidly and will make landfall by Monday morning. Officials say all citizens in affected areas should move to safe shelters as a precaution.
