As of 1:30 pm on October 28, 2025, Cyclone Montha is about 100 km south-southeast of Machilipatnam and 180 km from Kakinada, moving north-northwest at 12 kmph. It is expected to cross the Andhra Pradesh coast near Kakinada by evening/night. The storm will bring maximum sustained winds of 90-100 kmph, gusting up to 110 kmph. Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi announced that more than 2,000 disaster relief centers have been opened in eight southern districts. More than 11,000 people have been evacuated to these shelters to protect them from Cyclone Montha.

The India Meteorological Department has forecasted moderate rain with light thunderstorms and lightning in Chennai, Kanchipuram, Kanniyakumari, Tirunelveli, and other areas in Tamil Nadu.

As of 11:30 AM on October 28, 2025, Cyclone Montha is located approximately 120 km south-southeast of Machilipatnam and 200 km south-southeast of Kakinada. The cyclone is moving north-northwest at 12 km/h and is forecasted to make landfall shortly.

On Saturday, October 28, 2025, at 8:30 AM IST, Cyclone Montha was observed by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) over the west-central Bay of Bengal. It had moved 12 km/h north-northwest in the past 6 hours, was approximately 160 km south-southeast of Machilipatnam (Andhra Pradesh), 240 km south-southeast of Kakinada (Andhra Pradesh), 320 km south-southwest of Visakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh) and 530 km south-southwest of Gopalpur (Odisha).  
Residents are advised to be alert as the cyclone and continued heavy rainfall with gusty winds starts to move on land towards the coast. The cyclone is expected to make landfall on October 28, near the Andhra coast.

The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has maintained 45 teams for cyclone related disaster mitigation across Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Chhattisgarh. Twenty-five teams have been pre-deployed in vulnerable areas, with twenty teams resting for response. The response teams were deployed to manage rescues and relief in the immediate outcome of Cyclone Montha in the region.

In Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, heavy rain from cyclone Montha caused a wall to fall near the Malkapuram police station, with no casualties reported. The situation is being monitored by state officials as the cyclone is bringing heavy rain and strong winds to the region. 

The regional meteorology center issued storm warnings for Tamil Nadu ports. Local Warning Signal No. 4 is active in Chennai, Ennore, and Kattupalli ports. Signal No. 2 warnings are in place for Cuddalore, Nagapattinam, Puducherry, and Karaikal ports. Port authorities are on alert to handle adverse weather conditions.

Andhra Pradesh has established 1,906 relief camps and 364 school shelters in 1,238 vulnerable villages. These camps provide shelter and essential supplies for evacuated residents as Cyclone Montha approaches, ensuring their safety and comfort during the storm.

Flood warning issued for villages along the Palar River in Kanchipuram, Walajabad, and Uthiramerur taluks. Due to surplus water release from the Palar dam, locals are advised to avoid entering or crossing the river and keep livestock away for safety. Continuous rainfall may increase river inflow causing further flood risk.

Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi led a meeting to review cyclone preparedness. Key officials including Revenue Minister Suresh Pujari, Chief Secretary Manoj Ahuja, and IMD Director Manorama Mohanty joined the discussion. District Collectors from vulnerable areas participated virtually to coordinate smooth evacuations and relief measures.

East Coast Railway has cancelled several trains because of Cyclone Montha. Samaleswari Express from Rayagada and Jagadalpur is terminated at Rayagada on October 29. Hirakhand Express and Intercity Express services between Rayagada and Jagadalpur on October 28 and 29 are also cancelled to ensure passenger safety.

The NDRF, along with NDMA and SDMAs, is closely monitoring the cyclone Montha situation along the coasts of Andhra Pradesh and neighboring states. NDRF works with the district administration and provides a prompt response, coordination, rescue, and assistance in relief operations. A meeting with the Meteorological Department supports NDRF’s efforts and preparedness.

As a preventive measure, the NDRF teams have held a public awareness campaign along with the local government agencies to make the coastal people aware about the need to evacuate and to stay away from Cyclone Montha.

The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has dispatched a total of 22 squads comprising personnel and equipment including boats, cutting tools, communication gadgets, and rescue gear to the regions hit by Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, and Puducherry for carrying out the evacuation, the relief, and the restoration phases.

In order to decrease risk, flights from Gannavaram Airport and several trains have already been cancelled or diverted in the region. Officials continue to request that the public stay indoors, be stay off the roads, and keep checking government monitoring. 

The government agencies in Andhra Pradesh and Odisha have activated their disaster response teams, set-up control rooms, and cleared areas of drainage infrastructure to ensure waterlogging does not occur. Evacuations are occurring in the areas most at risk from the cyclone.

As of Friday morning, October 28 Cyclone Montha, was a severe cyclonic storm in west-central Bay of Bengal. It is currently moving north-northwest towards the coast of Andhra Pradesh and is predicted to make landfall this evening between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam.

Cyclone Montha brought torrential rain that resulted in the cancellations of 30 flights from Gannavaram Airport in Andhra Pradesh. 32 trains that were on a route through certain affected areas in Odisha, were either cancelled or diverted as a precaution.

The Andhra Pradesh administration is fully prepared for Cyclone Montha, with control rooms established and village-level response teams on high alert. Drainage systems and canals are kept clear to avoid waterlogging as the cyclone impacts intensify.​

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) advised Cyclone Montha intensified into a severe cyclonic storm during the 10:00 A.M. IST bulleting on October 28, 2025 based on the surveillance by Doppler weather radar and meteorological satellite at 5:30 A.M. on October 28, 2025. Based on standard-objectivization, Cyclone Montha is expected to move inland along the coast of Andhra Pradesh between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam, during the evening or night bulletin on the same day. Coastal residents at risk have been advised to remain vigilant, follow instructions issued by the local government, and stay protected from heavy rainfall and high winds.

Cyclone Montha is the first cyclone of this year, and because of the cyclone we may see rainfall in Tamil Nadu, particularly in Chennai and Kanchipuram. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a weather warning for a few districts in Tamil Nadu because of Cyclone Montha, which is expected to bring moderate to heavy rainfall to part of the state.

Local officials are advising residents to be alert and to take precautions in advance of rain from Cyclone Montha, which is reported to be making landfall in Andhra Pradesh. Rain is expected to occur into Tuesday and ease as cyclone makes landfall.<a href=" dir="ltr">

A severe cyclonic storm has led to the cancellation/diversion of 32 trains through Visakhapatnam and Odisha, due to the cyclone. Digital updates have been issued by local authorities and railway staff, who are handling the diversions and short-terminations to ensure the safety of travelers.

These updates show that preparations and steps are being taken as cyclonic storm Montha approaches the eastern coastline of India, with heavy rains and strong winds across states.

Red alerts have been declared in Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Odisha in advance of cyclone Montha. Yellow alerts are in place in parts of Karnataka, Maharashtra, Kerala, West Bengal and Gujarat to prepare for localized impacts and heavy rainfall. 

The Met Department has warned for heavy rainfall in Jharkhand till October 31 due to cyclone Montha. The Vidarbha region will see moderate to heavy rainfall till October 30 as part of the cyclone’s weather system.

The cyclone is about 190 km south-southeast of Machilipatnam, 270 km south-southeast of Kakinada, 340 km south-southwest of Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh and 550 km south-southwest of Gopalpur in Odisha. It is likely to continue to move north-northwestwards and cross Andhra Pradesh coast between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam around Kakinada during evening/night of today, the 28th October as a severe cyclonic storm with a maximum sustained wind speed of 90-100 kmph gusting to 110 kmph.

As the cyclonic storm Montha over westcentral Bay of Bengal moved north-northwestwards with a speed of 15 kmph during the past six hours, the IMD said it intensified into a severe cyclonic storm and lay centred at 5.30 am about 190 km south to south east of Machilipatnam. It is likely to continue to move north-northwestwards and cross the Andhra Pradesh coast between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam around Kakinada during the evening and night of Tuesday as a severe cyclonic storm with a maximum sustained wind speed of 90-100 kmph and gusting to 110 kmph.

Cyclone ‘Montha’ over the westcentral Bay of Bengal moved north to northwestwards with a speed of 15 kmph during the past six hours and intensified into a severe cyclonic storm by 5.30 am on Tuesday, IMD said. The weather system lay centred 190 km south to southeast of Machilipatnam, 270 km south to southeast of Kakinada and 340 km south to southeast of Vizag at 5.30 am.

The South Central Railway authorities requested train travelers only to travel during the cyclone period of October 27 and 28 if travel is absolutely necessary and instructed travelers to check the status of trains before initiating travel, either from IRCTC or NTES or RailOne or call 139 for confirmation. The notice is to limit the risk of heavy rains or strong winds at coastal track locations.

Due to the adverse weather condition caused by Cyclone Montha , South Central Railway has announced the cancellation of 43 trains which were supposed to operate on the Visakhapatnam line, effective on October 28, 2025. The operation of trains will resume after safety checks and track clearance when the weather improves. 

The NDRF and SDRF teams, with fire services, swimmers, OBM boats, and life jackets are ready for deployment along the coast of Andhra Pradesh. Ambulance services and medical camps in cyclone shelters have been initiated for any emergencies. 

A yellow alert is in effect for heavy rain over Karnataka, Goa, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, and Bengal as Cyclone Montha approaches those states. Therefore, residents of the mentioned states should prepare for moderate to heavy rainfall within the next couple of days.

As per IMD, Cyclone Storm Montha has moved on a north-north movement over the Bay of Bengal and is currently traveling at a speed of 15 kmph wind speed. The cyclone is currently about 280 km away from Machilipatnam and advised that the cyclone is expected to reach severe stage close to the morning of October 28. The landfall is anticipated near Kakinada, with wind gusts of about 110 kmph.

The IMD confirms that Cyclone Montha will track northwestward to make landfall along the Andhra coast during the evening/night of October 28, with landfall likely between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam (Kakinada). The system is continuing to gradually intensify and has issued advisories and action alerts for coastal districts for safety.

Cyclone Montha is predicted to make landfall as a severe cyclone in the 90-100 kmph range with gusts of around 110 kmph. The likely landing area extends between Kakinada and Machilipatnam (between Kakinada and Kalingapatnam) along the Andhra Pradesh coast in approximately the evening/night of October 28. This is according to the IMD’s latest tracking.

The authorities have ordered the closure of all schools and Anganwadi centres in Andhra Pradesh and Odisha as a precaution to keep children and staff safe during heavy rains and potential flooding, and all government employees have had their leave cancelled until October 30.

According to IMD, moderate to heavy rains are expected across the Vidarbha region during the 28th to the 30th of October, as Cyclone Montha continues northwest. Districts of Chandrapur, Gadchiroli, Wardha, Washim, Yavatmal, Bhandara, Gondia, and Nagpur will experience fresh gusty winds reaching 50kmph, lightning and thunderstorms as a part of the ‘yellow’ alert.

Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu has ordered that district officials conduct evacuation of citizens from coastal areas considered vulnerable, to rehabilitation centres as soon as possible. He emphasized the provision of good quality food, safe drinking water, and appointed special officers to manage the activities inside the rehabilitation centre. The Chief Minister cautioned against impurities in drinking water while responding to emergency measures.

Cyclone Montha, likely to turn ‘severe’, will cross Andhra Pradesh’s coast tonight near Kakinada. IMD has issued an orange alert for Peddapalli, Jayashankar Bhupalpally, and Mulugu districts. All northeast districts remain under yellow alert. Residents should expect extremely heavy rainfall and strong winds; authorities urge precautions.​

Over the west-central Bay of Bengal, Cyclone “Montha,” which is currently traveling northwest at 15–18 kmph, has gotten stronger.  It was around 450 kilometers southeast of Kakinada as of Monday night, and by the evening of October 28, it is predicted to reach land close to Kakinada as a severe storm with wind gusts of 90 to 110 kmph.  Fishermen are advised not to go out to sea till October 29 due to the IMD’s predictions of heavy to extremely heavy rains in Yanam and coastal Andhra Pradesh.

From Nellore to Srikakulam, large sea waves of 2 to 4.7 meters are predicted by the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) to continue until 11:30 p.m. on Monday.  Low-lying areas between Yanam and Machilipatnam might be inundated by a storm surge up to one meter above tide levels, putting coastal areas on flood alert.  Residents have been urged by authorities to stay indoors and refrain from traveling, particularly when the rains get heavier during the night.

Andhra Pradesh and Odisha have been placed on high alert in anticipation of Cyclone “Montha,” which is predicted to make landfall on October 28. They are conducting evacuations and getting ready for post-storm relief.  According to PTI, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has promised the state of Andhra Pradesh his entire support.

In light of Cyclone “Montha’s” intensification, Andhra Pradesh Health Minister Satya Kumar Yadav announced on Monday that 787 pregnant women who were close to giving birth had been moved to local hospitals as a precaution.  Based on data collected by Auxiliary Nurse Midwives (ANMs), the women who were located within a week of their due dates were transferred to district and local government hospitals.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has ordered officials to act immediately to protect lives and minimize damage in coastal districts as Cyclone Montha approaches the eastern coast, according to a statement.

As the storm approaches Kakinada, BJP National President JP Nadda has ordered party units in Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Andaman & Nicobar to participate in rescue and relief efforts, according to ANI.

As Cyclone Montha approaches the area, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) and the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) have predicted heavy sea waves along the Andhra Pradesh coast from Nellore to Srikakulam.  On October 27, between 5:30 and 11:30 p.m., waves of 2 to 4.7 m are predicted, per a combined bulletin released by the two agencies.  Coastal residents and fishermen have been advised by authorities to exercise caution and refrain from going out to sea during this time.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a yellow advisory, predicting moderate to heavy rain in Maharashtra’s Vidarbha area from October 28 to 30 due to Cyclone Montha.  Chandrapur, Gadchiroli, Wardha, Washim, Yavatmal, Bhandara, Gondia, and Nagpur are all predicted to see thunderstorms, lightning, and strong gusts of 40 to 50 km/h.

In an official statement on Monday, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu urged officials to act quickly to save lives and minimize damage in coastal districts as Cyclone Montha approaches the eastern coast. The Chief Minister instructed district collectors and police superintendents to quickly relocate inhabitants from vulnerable coastal areas to rehabilitation facilities during a teleconference held from the Secretariat’s RTGS Centre.

A number of district administrations in Tamil Nadu have declared Tuesday’s school holidays due to the ongoing, intense rains in some areas of the state.  Schools and institutions in the districts of Chengalpattu and Cuddalore will not be open tomorrow due to the ongoing rains and waterlogging that impact several low-lying areas.  Heavy rains have disrupted daily life in numerous sections of Chennai, prompting the district administration to proclaim a school holiday.

Monday, October 27, 2025, was designated as a public holiday for Chhath Puja by the Delhi government.  On the other hand, Delhi has not announced a vacation for October 28.

People who live in locations that are at risk are encouraged to keep an eye out for official updates, heed evacuation orders when they are given, protect their most important possessions, and stay away from the coast when warnings are in effect.  The best defences against the effects of such natural disasters continue to be community awareness and group readiness.

Rashmi Siddharth Zagade, the district collector for Chennai, announced a school break on Tuesday due to the Montha cyclone and severe rainfall.

43 trains that were supposed to travel through Visakhapatnam on October 28 have been cancelled by authorities as Cyclone Montha moves closer to the Andhra Pradesh coast.  Additionally, as a precaution, all IndiGo and Air India Express flights from the Vizag airport have been cancelled.

The Andhra Pradesh government is on high alert as Cyclone Montha moves closer to the coast. Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu and Minister Nara Lokesh are personally supervising 24/7 monitoring from the Real-Time Governance Society (RTGS) war room, coordinating efforts with district authorities and central agencies.

The chief minister of Andhra Pradesh, N Chandrababu Naidu, directed officials to immediately evacuate people living in coastal areas to rehabilitation centers due to Cyclone Montha’s expected intensification from tomorrow.

“Due to prevailing cyclone conditions and heavy rainfall expected in and around Vijayawada, Visakhapatnam and Rajahmundry, flight operations to and from these cities are affected,” the statement said.

The airline added, “Your safety and comfort remain our top priority. Please stay safe and take care.” 

Cyclone Montha triggers rain in Kerala, particularly in the northern and central regions. the increased rainfall in the state is likely to presist for the next two days. 

Tirupati District Collector S. Venkateshwar has urged residents to remain indoors as Cyclone Montha nears the coast around Kakinada. control rooms have been activated, coastal areas are on high alert, and the public is advised to avoid travel, specially around Tirumala. 

Cyclone Montha began hits several South Coastal Andhra Pradesh districts amid strong winds and heavy rainfall. over the past six hours, the cyclone has been moving toward the coast at a speed of 18 kmph and is currently located 520 km from Chennai, 570 km from Kakinada, and 600 km from Visakhapatna,

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for 11 districts of Karnataka on October 27 and 28 amid Cyclone Montha. 

According to C.S. Patil, a scientist at IMD Bengaluru, said that Uttara Kannada, Udupi, Dakshina Kannada, Bidar, Kalaburgi, Yadgir, Vijayapura, Bagalkot, Raichur, Koppal, and Gadag are expected to experince heavy rainfall. 

The Cyclone Montha makes landfall in Andhra Pradesh, which is anticipated to strengthen into a severe cyclonic storm. 

Fishermen have been strictly instructed to stay off the sea until October 30, as all fishing operations have been suspended. The warning signal number 2 has been raised at all ports across Odisha to ensure safety. 

IMD issued a red alert for the districts of Ganjam, Gajapati, Koraput, Rayagada, and Malkangiri, Koraput, where heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected. Meanwhile, an orange alert is in force for Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nayagarh, Puri, Khurda, Sonepur, Boudh, Balangir, and Cuttack, where heavy to very heavy rainfall us expected. 

An orange alert has been issued for the districts of Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Malkangiri, Koraput, Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, and Kandhamal, where heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected. Meanwhile, a yellow alert is in force for Sonepur, Boudh, Balangir, Nayagarh, Khurda, Cuttack, Puri, Jagatsinghpur, and Kendrapara. 

Cyclone Montha brings rain and wind to Visakhapatnam. IMD says that Montha will turn into a severe cyclonic storm prior to landfall on the coast in AP. Precautions, including school closings and relief measures, are underway. Visakhapatnam and nearby districts are in heightened caution mode, and the public are advised to take precautions as the cyclone nears landfall by late October 28.

The cyclone is moving west-northwestwards over the southwest Bay of Bengal and is expected to intensify into a severe cyclonic storm by October 28 morning. Residents are advised to stay alert and prepared for intense weather conditions.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi communicated with Andhra Pradesh chief minister Chandrababu Naidu over Cyclone Montha preparedness. CM Naidu directed precautions immediately, including to reinforce canal banks, and assigned Nara Lokesh to liaise with PMO for to better the response related to floods and relief.

An orange alert has been issued for Chennai, Thiruvallur, Ranipet, Kancheepuram, and Chengalpattu. Heavy rains to very heavy rains expected, thunderstorms, and strong winds on the way. Residents have been informed to be cautious and listen for updates about the weather threat.

Cyclone Montha is intensifying over the Bay of Bengal and is expected to land between Machilipatnam and Kakinapatanam, Andhra Pradesh in the evening of October 28, 2025. The Indian Meteorological Department has red alerts in most coastal districts of Andhra Pradesh after forecasting heavy rains, and winds each up to 110 kmph, and potential for flooding. Schools were closed, activities of boating were suspended, and nearly 50,000 evacuees have been moved from vulnerable areas to relief camps. Beaches in important districts such as Eluru, Krishna, or West Godavari have all been closed out of concern for the severe weather and safety precautions. This cyclone also presents a major threat to the paddy crops in Anakapalli district which are nearing harvest and span over 1.38 lakhs acres. Officials are monitoring the situation, establishing control rooms if necessary, mandating evacuations, and monitoring the public safety of residents. Residents are advised to stay indoors and follow all safety precautions until cyclone Montha passes.

On October 27, 2025, IMD reported that Cyclone Montha is over the southwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal, moving north-northwest at 18 kmph. It lies about 520 km east-southeast of Chennai. The storm is predicted to intensify into a severe cyclonic storm by the morning of October 28 and is expected to hit the Andhra Pradesh coast near Kakinada during the evening or night of October 28. Residents in the region should stay alert and prepare for heavy rain and strong winds. 

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a cyclone warning on October 27, 2025, at 9:00 AM IST. Cyclone Montha, currently over the southwest and adjoining west-central and southeast Bay of Bengal, is moving northwest at 15 kmph. It is about 560 km east-southeast of Chennai and 620 km south-southeast of Kakinada. The storm is expected to intensify into a severe cyclonic storm by the morning of October 28 and make landfall near Kakinada on the evening or night of the same day.

• Cyclone Montha has formed over the Bay of Bengal as the system has intensified into a cyclonic storm from deep depression.
• It is currently positioned nearly 640 Kms east south east of Chennai and around 710 Kms, southeast of Kakinada (Andhra Pradesh).

Weather system Montha is progressing in a north-west direction through the Bay of Bengal and is anticipated to impact land near the eastern part of India (Andhra Pradesh) on the 28th of October 2025. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has classified this weather system as producing heavy to very heavy rainfall across Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Telangana through the 30th of October. Wind gusts are has been forecasted to potentially reach up to 90-100 km (56 – 62 mph). Coastal locations are on high alert due to the considerable threat to safety posed by the cyclone. Fisherman should desist from local fishing due to the cyclone warnings. Furthermore, in preemptive preparation for the cyclone’s landfall the authorities are implementing plans to efficiently respond to the flooding and other disruptions due to the cyclone. 

NTR district, all government welfare hostels (BC, SC, ST, and Gurukul) were closed and the students were sent home to precaution. Following Collector G. Lakshmisha’s orders, schools and colleges announced holidays from October 27 to 29. Pregnant women were taken to hospitals as a precaution. The Collector reviewed readiness with officials from many departments to prepare for Tropical Storm Montha.

To ensure the safety of students in anticipation of Cyclone Montha, schools and colleges in Andhra Pradesh and Odisha will be closed until October 30, 2023, in locations such as Vizianagaram, Visakhapatnam, Kakinada, West Godavari, Ganjam, and Malkangiri. The government has ordered that the schools and anganwadi centres not conduct operations during this time period. Precautionary measures are initiated to protect students and the general public from heavy rain and winds associated with the cyclone.

The Health Department has drafted comprehensive SOPs to instruct doctors and health centres on how to react during Cyclone Montha, including measures in case of disease prevention, emergency care, and rehabilitation” at all levels, including local sub-centres, districts, and teaching hospitals. The emphasis is on ensuring the availability of medicines and medical supplies, sanitation facilities, and the readiness of health workers to combat public health issues as the cyclone continues to approach more closely. Preparedness also involves focussing attention to vulnerable populations and preventing both waterborne diseases and vector diseases.

All schools and colleges in Yanam are closed until October 29 as it expected heavy rain and winds possible related to Cyclone Montha. Fishermen near the coast are warned not to enter the water due to winds of at least 90-100 km/h expected. The tourism boathouse will be closed until further notice. Effects from the cyclone might be felt as early October 26, heavy rains are expected through October 29. Local officials are monitoring the situation and have plans in place to assist in case it is necessary. 

Cyclone Montha is progressing northwesterly at 15 kilometers per hour.As of the morning of October 23, the system was about 560 km east-southeast of Chennai; 620 km south-southeast of Kakinada; and 650 km south-southeast of Visakhapatnam, fairly distant from the coast, however, likely heading to Andhra Pradesh, and is only 850 km south of Gopalpur, Odisha, and 810 km west of Port Blair, Andaman & Nicobar Islands. Cyclone Montha is expected to progress northwesterly and strengthen near the expected landfall window by the morning of October 28.

Puducherry is preparing for Cyclone Montha, with forecasts showing heavy rain and high winds beginning October 27. Authorities have established response measures to ensure residents’ safety as the cyclone system will intensify over the Bay of Bengal and affect Indian coastal states into the afternoon. All residents are advised to stay indoors and not do anything in sea or water. The alert status is high as we monitor the situation and implement response measures to mitigate any negative impacts of the cyclone.

The Indian Army is alert as cyclonic systems are strengthening over the Bay of Bengal and Arabian Sea, with Cyclone Montha likely to increase its intensity, coordination with NDMA has also been established for real-time updates and responses. Disaster response teams and control rooms are prepared to assist with relocation and rescue and relief measures in coastal states, and severe weather is expected in Andhra Pradesh and other coastal regions.

It looks like Delhi and NCR may receive light scattered rain on October 27 and 28, due to a western disturbance, according to the IMD. No rain is expected on October 29, when cloud seeding is scheduled in northwest Delhi. Moist easterly winds will bring night temperatures upper by two to three degrees by Tuesday. Cloudy skies will be on October 29, even though no rain is expected. Residents should keep an eye on the weather alerts.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has indicated that Cyclone Montha is tracking northwestwards over the Bay of Bengal, and it is expected to intensify into a severe cyclone storm over these area by Tuesday (October 28, 2025) morning. It is very likely to cross near Kakinada, Ayngaprasad between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam Tuesday night. Further, it is expected to have maximum sustained wind speeds of about 90 – 100 kmph, gusting to 110 kmph, heavy rainfall, and rough to very rough sea conditions. Red alerts have been issued for DC Warnings in the coastal districts and closely monitoring the development for emergency responses and evacuations.

Cyclone Montha is likely to strengthen into a ‘severe’ cyclonic storm. The IMD warns that a storm surge is expected along the Andhra Pradesh coast and around the Yanam area of Puducherry, with a surge of around 1 metre above tide level, which would inundate low-lying coastal areas at the time of landfall on Tuesday night, near Kakinada. Winds are expected to be around 100 km/hr, with heavy rain expected. Relevant authorities are issuing public advisories and have declared cyclone related preparedness and relief, with evacuation and preparedness activities across coastal areas and zones. Residents in inundation prone areas should follow instructions provided by relevant authorities.

The Government of Andhra Pradesh has classified Srikakulam and Vizianagaram districts as special focus areas as Cyclone Montha approaches land, learning from previous cyclones like Laila, Phailin, Hud-Hud, and Titli. Forecasts from the Indian Meteorological Department anticipate the 185-km coastline of Srikakulam from Pydibhimavaram to Ichchapuram to be significantly impacted as the cyclone is forecasted to make landfall between Machilipatnam-Kalingapatnam. Emergency protocols and control rooms have been established, disaster teams are being positioned, fishing has been deferred, and evacuation plans for coastal residents along with the collection of relief materials are in the works to minimize potential damage. As a precaution, schools and colleges in coastal Andhra and weather are being closely monitored.

The IMD has announced an orange alert for Tamil Nadu and Puducherry for October 27 and 28 as cyclone Montha makes its approach to the east coast. Heavy and very heavy rains are expected in and around Chennai and districts including Tiruvallur and Ranipet as well, with flooding inundating roads and impacting transportation. Disaster response teams are on alert, and fishing teams have been advised to avoid venturing out into the sea during this time and weather event. Residents of these areas should remain alert and await additional updates from the local government for official advisories and instructions for safety.

Guntur Municipal Commissioner Puli Srinivasulu has asked town planning officials to remove all encroachments on footpaths adjacent to important city roads, with urgency. This is to enable free flow of rainwater into the city’s drainage system without causing water logging or road stagnation. He stressed the need for prompt clearing and debris removal, on a war footing basis. 

The Commissioner stated that encroachments obstructing rainwater flow disrupt drainage, which contributes to flooding, especially in the event of rains. He also ordered ‘preparedness measures’ for flood control, such as clearing the debris and placing equipment in low-lying areas to prevent future water stagnation.

Officials are tasked to observe and remove encroachments on a daily basis, to improve water flow and traffic movement.

Cyclone Montha Live Tracking: The government of Odisha has begun evacuating residents from high-risk areas and has deployed 128 disaster response teams across eight districts. This action follows the IMD’s prediction of a cyclonic storm forming by the next morning as the deep depression strengthens in the Bay of Bengal.  

“The system is expected to move approximately west-northwestward and further intensify into a cyclonic storm over the southwest and adjacent westcentral Bay of Bengal within the next 12 hours,” the IMD announced on Sunday night, adding that it is likely to subsequently shift northwestward, and then north-northwestward, intensifying into a severe cyclonic storm by the morning of October 28.

Cyclone Montha Live Updates: A deep depression, “Montha,” over the Bay of Bengal will cause heavy rain in some districts of West Bengal from October 28 to 31, the IMD said on Sunday. 

The fishermen shouldn’t venture out to sea along and off the West Bengal coast until October 30, and to those at sea should return by Monday, the meteorological department said. 

The weather system is likely to make landfall as a severe cyclone along the coast of Andhra Pradesh during the night of October 28, and expect light to moderate rainfall in southern Bengal’s Kolkata and Howrah, as well as South 24 Parganas, Purba and Paschim Medinipur, Jhargram, Purulia, Bankura, and Hooghly.

In an Interview with ANI, Odisha’s Revenue and Disaster Management, Suresh Pujari said the state is prepared and has done all precautionary preparations for cyclone Montha , Mr Pujari also stated that eight districts were identified as being the “most vulnerable,” and that all departments are instructed to be vigilant and prepared. “The Government of Odisha, come cyclone has made comprehensive preparations located currently now 930 kilometers from then Odisha Coast heading west northwest,” stated minister. Eight districts in the state have been recognized as highly susceptible… We assessed our preparedness with officials, pinpointing vulnerable areas and notifying pertinent departments such as energy, public relations, rural development, health, and agriculture… Cyclone shelters, emergency relief centers, and designated plots are operational… The water resources department has begun to release water from reservoirs,” he was quoted as saying.

IMD has issued an Orange Alert for Chennai and surrounding areas as Cyclone Montha is moving to the east coast of the country with a potential of heavy rainfall.

Although the issued heavy rain warnings, no orders are imposed on school/college closures, so schools and colleges will operate as normal.

On Sunday, the Odisha government put all 30 districts of the state on a state of alert after it determined that the depression in the Bay of Bengal (Montha), had intensified into a deep depression.

Odisha is expected to see very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall on October 28 and 29, the officials added.

Also, the weather office has hoisted Distant Cautionary Signal No-I (DC-1) at all ports of Odisha and advised fishermen not to venture into the sea until October 29.

As reported by the IMD, a red alert has been declared for certain regions of Andhra Pradesh. According to the organization’s advisory system on its official website, a red alert is indicated for the following districts: Kakinada, Kona Seema, Eluru, West Godavari, Krishna, Guntur, Baptala, Prakasam and SPSR Nellor.

Additionally, a two-day school closure has been announced across certain districts of the southern state.

As explained by India Meteorological Department (IMD), the deep depression continued to move west-northwest at 8 kmph during the last 6 hours of observation over the southeast Bay of Bengal.

Due to heavy rains because of Cyclone Montha, various districts are announcing school closures in Andhra Pradesh. The AP government announced a general school holiday for three districts – Visakhapatnam, Anakapalle and West Godavari – that were severely impacted due to Cyclone Montha on October 27 and 28. CM Chandrababu Naidu instructed the district collector to declare a general government and private school holiday, in addition to Junior and Degree colleges, on October 27 and 28 in Visakhapatnam, where Cyclone Montha made landfall and caused a lot of damage. The general holiday could be extended for two days if the schedules permit.

In seeking preparedness, the Odisha government has stationed over 5,000 trained personnel, including 24 teams from ODRAF, five teams from NDRF, and 99 Fire Service teams, to eight districts. All district administrations have been asked to remain ready to provide equipment and manpower for rescue and relief operations if there is a change in the cyclone’s track. All residents on the coastline should continue to stay inside, remain prepared, and follow all recommended safety protocols as the storm approaches.

The government of Odisha has started to evacuate people from the coastal and low-lying areas that could be in danger of Cyclone Montha’s approach to the state. On Sunday, the authorities have taken actions to start large-scale evacuations, with 128 disaster response teams moving into eight districts. According to IMD, the deep depression over the Bay of Bengal has started to strengthen very rapidly and will make landfall by Monday morning. Officials say all citizens in affected areas should move to safe shelters as a precaution.
