Since his current contract was set to expire in 2026, it appears that all parties are now in agreement to proceed with a smooth contract renewal.
Barcelona have been said to resume contract talks with Frenkie de Jong who reports have indicated that a contract was offered to the player and subsequently withdrawn due to business level issues.
The Catalan club has now offered a three year contract extension, which is until 2028, at the same level of salary that he currently earns, though without any portion of his back payments being deferrable which is in sync with their plan of financial restructuring. The transfer is yet to take place after a long history of strained relationships between the two clubs, Barcelona initially offered de Jong, but later recall their offer after failing to receive a counter offer. The reluctance of the club was further clouded by his then agent, Ali Dursun who had credibility issues with his club, Barcelona. De Jong has since changed representation and been able to continue to communicate with Dursun, and this has encouraged dialogue once again to occur.
In retrospect, Barcelona had considered a pay cut renewal as a measure to better manage their wage bill with a view of remaining more financially stable and within Financial Fair Play rules. De Jong did not accept cuts in salary and agreed on a realistic transfer price which is about 12 million euros causing tension between him and the club in relation to the future. President Joan Laporta and sporting director Deco have repeatedly insisted on the player being vital to the team, and being hopeful that an amicable agreement can be settled. That has changed under manager Hansi Flick who brought de Jong back into the fold as a core component of his system, and engaging him in leadership duties and increased powers of influence.
The new offer contract also has the waived deferred wages which was a debatable factor in the previous contractual negotiations and this move on the part of Barcelona reflects a certain trade off between its financial capability and the desire to hold on to one of the pillars in its team. Both parties attracted to the idea of making the contract renewal process as seamless as possible, as his contract is set to expire in 2026 at the time of writing.
