Bucs Rookie Desmond Watson Sits Out While Weight Loss Remains Top Priority

Buccaneers rookie Desmond Watson remains sidelined as he works to meet a team-set weight loss goal. At 450 pounds, the 6’6” defensive lineman is shedding weight through conditioning and nutrition. Though not yet cleared to practice, he’s viewed as a potential impact player once he’s ready.

Desmond Watson, a 6-foot-6, 450-pound rookie defensive lineman, continues to watch Tampa Bay Buccaneers practices from the sideline as he works toward meeting a team-mandated weight loss goal. Despite being eager to suit up, the undrafted former Florida Gator remains on the non-football injury list, with no set timeline for his return to drills.

Watson, who weighed in at 464 pounds at his pro day making him the heaviest player in NFL history has shed nearly 15 pounds since signing with the Bucs in April 2025. However, the coaching staff is holding firm on its plan to prioritize his long-term health before allowing him into pads.

Watson Grinding Off the Field

Each day at training camp, Watson is seen walking laps in the sweltering Florida heat, working with the team’s nutritionist and strength staff. While his teammates participate in drills, Watson looks on, clearly itching to join them.

“He’s working at it and we’re working with him,” said head coach Todd Bowles. “It’s just about trying to get him better, to be a healthier player and get him on the field a little more.” Bowles added that no firm return date has been set, though the staff hopes to finalize a long-term plan by week’s end.

A Massive Talent on Hold

Watson had a solid college career at Florida, racking up 63 tackles and 1.5 sacks from 2021 to 2024. Known for clogging running lanes and excelling in short-yardage situations, he could provide a much-needed boost to a Buccaneers defensive line already dealing with injuries.

Potential Run-Stuffer in the Making

For now, Watson’s focus remains on conditioning. If he hits his weight targets, Tampa Bay may soon get a rare combination of size, strength, and run-stopping ability back on the field.
