Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma's ODI Future to be Decided After Asia Cup 2025: BCCI Sources (Image Credit - X)
India’s batting icons, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, are set to hold talks with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) regarding their international careers. The two players are unsure about their future in ODI cricket after the forthcoming white-ball series in Australia, after their decision to retire in Tests and T20Is.
It is understood that the discussions will probably be held after the Asia Cup. It is anticipated that the BCCI will leave the decision of whether the two veterans will continue playing ODIs to the two. In the same meeting, Shreyas Iyer might be appointed the captain of ODI cricket team, taking off the burden of leadership off the shoulders of Rohit Sharma.
The move is in the wake of the shocking exclusion of Iyer in the Asia Cup team, even as Gill has been brought back as the vice-captain of the T20I side. The shift is a sign of a strategic thinking by the selectors to combine both experience and youth, and even succession in leadership.
Should Kohli choose to continue playing ODIs, there is a possibility that he will catch up with Sachin Tendulkar in terms of the record of the number of runs in the format. Kohli has just passed 14,000 runs but he still has a long way to go before he can break Tendulkar as he will require more than 4,000 runs to achieve this. Amazingly, his batting average is far better than the former captain who is a legend.
Kohli’s recent form has been boosted by his Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 performance, where he finally clinched the title with Royal Challengers Bengaluru after an 18-year wait. This victory is likely to give him the boost of confidence when considering the option of playing ODIs in the future.
Meanwhile, Rohit Sharma was a witness to the exciting Indian win over England in the 5 th Test at The Oval that saw India clinch the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy on a 2-2 draw. He now sets his eyes towards future ODI commitments with the captaincy debate probably playing a role in his considerations.
Rohit has scored 11,168 runs in 273 ODIs with an average of 48.76. He has 32 centuries and 58 fifties to his name and is the only player in history to make three double centuries in ODIs. The deliberations of the BCCI can restructure the leadership and batting line-up of India in the ODIs in the coming years.
The discussions after the Asia Cup will be critical to the white-ball strategy of India. It is a step forward to keep Kohli and Rohit and the possibility of Iyer becoming a captain can turn the team around. The approach of the board seems to strike a balance between the experience of the veterans and the preparation of the next generation on the international front.
Currently, the fans are anticipating whether the Kohli-Rohit combination will still be seen in the ODIs or they will have a new dawn with Iyer at the helm. The Asia Cup might be the final episode in the history of India in ODIs before the big calls are made and the future of the ODI game in India is decided.
