Jasprit Bumrah even provided theatrical value to his deadly bowling by mocking Haris Rauf in the final of the electrifying Asia Cup 2025 between India and Pakistan, a moment that immediately became viral.
When Bumrah dismissed Rauf and threw him a pinpoint yorker, he then did a gesture of an airplane crashing, in a sharp reply to the earlier ‘plane celebration’ by Rauf in the Super Four match. That had been a send off heavy in subtext. The previous time Rauf was seen to celebrate a boundary or a wicket with a gesture of an aircraft, which created controversy and drew criticism on behalf of the BCCI. Some also construed a 6-0 sign by Rauf as a reference to controversial reports of crashed planes, which only aggravated the response of Indian fans and the cricketing administrations.
The drama in the field corresponded to the plot of the match. Pakistan, who began so well, fell into the spin trap of India. Sahibzada Farhan was early on fire with a fifty and joined Fakhar Zaman to drive Pakistan to 113 to 1, but the gears fell thereafter. The spinners of India organized the reversal, Kuldeep Yadav took the initiative and scored 4/30 and Axar Patel and Varun Chakravarthy put the screws on the tailenders. It was the dismissal of Haris Rauf which was later replaced by the mocking gesture of Bumrah in what turned out to be a final full of tension and spectacle. It was like poetic justice with Indian fans and provocative to many Pakistan supporters. But symbolism aside, it made the lines very clear as to the stakes and the primal emotion in one of the most intense rivalries in cricket. This point, in combination with the dramatic collapse of Pakistan, made the end of the final one that would be remembered not only because of the trophy but the drama as well.
